MAIN NORTH ROAD PLAN

WIDENING OF BIG SECTION STRETCH FROM KAIAPOI TO ASHLEY It is announced by the Public Works Department that the Main North highway between Kaiapoi and the Ashley river is to be widened. The work will be carried out by British Pavements (Canterbury). Ltd., whose tender has been accepted for the bituminous paving of the shoulders of the road from Kaiapoi to the bridge. The road is at present paved to a width of 18 feet, but the addition of three-foot shoulders on each side will increase its width by six feet. Important paving projects are also in hand for some sections of the road to the West Coast. When these are completed there will be an unbroken stretch of 19 miles of bituminised paving from the city westwards.

The Public Works Denartment has accepted the tender of British Pavements (Canterbury), Ltd., for a bituminised smoothing coat on the West Coast road between Church corner, Riccarton and Russley road—a distance of two miles. Tenders are now being invited for bituminised paving on that stretch of the road between Sandy Knolls and Kirwee—a distance of six miles 18 chains. In addition, a bituminised, plant-mixed top is to be applied on the road between West Melton and Sandy Knolls —a distance of two miles 26 chains. The road through Darfield township is also to be sealed for a distance of three miles, this work forming part of the Sandy Knolls to Kirwee contract.

It is also announced that for the construction of an overbridge at Prebbleton on the SockburnSouthbridge highway will be called shortly, The structure will be similar in design to that constructed on the Main North road at Styx, with the exception that it will be much shorter, its length being 260 feet. The width of the proposed bridge between the wheelguards is 24 feet, and provision for footpaths is not contemplated. Tenders are also being invited for the construction of several small bridges on the Christchurch-Dune-din highway, in the Waimate County.
