BAPTIST UNION

CANTERBURY AUXILIARY MEETS

An address was given by the Rev; S. E. Woods, chaplain of the Student Christian movement, at the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Auxiliary of the Baptist Union of New Zealand on the subject of “present-day church tendencies with relation to world union.” He dealt with the necessity of the church to face up to social and economic problems of the world. A new conception of the Catholic Church was wanted—catholic in the sense universal. A common denominator in churchmanship was wanted, not giving up the fundamentals but each being complementary to the other. Christians the world over are recognising that civilisation is in the melting-pot. “The Council of Churches is the first ideal of realising the unity of the body of Christ. In England there are many

concrete evidences of churches acting together, but New Zealand shows a sad lack in any such movement,” he said. Motions of sympathy were passed with the wife and family of the Rev. L. B. Busfield, of Auckland, late pre-sident-elect of the Baptist Union, and to the Rev. Lawrence A. North, on the sudden death of his mother in Dunedin. The Lyttelton street church reported that it would be holding a flower show on November 27. It was also decided to hold a social gathering in appreciation ■f the work done in that district by the Hen. J. K. Archer and Mrs Archer.

An intimation was received from Mr J. Hobern tnat he was relinquishing the chaige uf Lincoln Church to leave for the foreign mission field. Mr W. V. . Stewart wrote accepting the superintendency of the Lyttelton street cause in succession to the Hon. J. K. Archer, and advice was received from the Rev. Dr. J. J. North, of the burd \yould be acting pastor for the three months.
