ADDINGTON MARKET

RECORD SHEEP ENTRY

VALUES WELL MAINTAINED In the opinion of old attendant:- at the Cards, yesterday’s entry of fat sheep was ;he biggest on record, between G0.)0 and 9500 being penned. The good sales of late and the fact that there will be no sale next week on account of the holiday, caused vendors rather to over-esti-mate requirements. Fat cattle sold at an casing for the big proportion of light and aged cows, but for the smaller proportion of good cattle last week’s rates were fully maintained. The fat sheep market opened at a decline of up to 2s a head, but recovered later. The sale continued until nearly 8 o’clock, when values dropped. Store sheep comprised for the most part a big line of Chatham Island wethers, and these sold well at the lower 3-ates ruling this last fortnight. The dry conditions are having a restraining effect on competition.

STORE SHEEP The only entry in the store sheep section of note was a consignment of more than a thousand Chatham Island wethers. These were four and six-tooths. and were shorn about a month ago. They sold tinder active competition at from 19s lOd to 23s 9d. these prices being from 2s to 2s 6d below those ruling for the first Chathams consignment sold a fortnight ago. The dry conditions and the fear of a drought no doubt caused the decline in price. There was little of interest in the ■varding apart from the Chathams sheep. A small pen of ewe hoggets sold at 23s 9d, a distinct relapse on the values of some weeks ago. Though ewes and lambs participated in the general easing, there were some good prices for good sorts ot ewes with full percentages. One small pen of 18 sold at 265, and another of 125 at 22s sd. Old sorts sold at from 11s 6d to I 'laics were;— Wethers—Sixty-nine Chathams at 21s 9d, 480 Chathams at 21s 6d. 215 Chathams at 19s lOd, 210 Chathams at 23s 9d 30 Chathams at 22a 6d, 29 twotooth at 17s. Hoggets—Ninety-five wether at 17s Id, 37 wether at 18s lOd. 21 ewe at 16s. 70 wether at 18s 7d, 169 wether at 15s 6d. 27 ewe at 23s 9d. Ewes and Lambs—Eighteen at 26s 97 at 17s sd, 139 at 14s 6d, 71 at 11s 6d, 87 at 15s sd. 58 at 13s 9d, 68 at 18s Id, 33 at 17s, 125 at 22s 5d (all counted).

SPRING LAMBS The entry in the lamb section comprised about 500 head, compared with 350 last week. Values did not change to much extent, although there was a good deal of irregularity in the sale and a proportion of passings. Quality covered a wide range, but a fair proportion comprised light weights. The average per lb was about Sd to lOd. H. Matson and Company sold;— On account of W. G. FAT SHEEP The entry constituted a record, comprising between 9000 and 9500 head. The sheep spread over into the store and fat lamb pens. Entries came from southern parts of the province and North Otago, but Mid and North Canterbury farmers were naturally very heavily represented. Quality was better than usual, being remarkably good considering the double size of the penning. The market opened weakly in the face of the overflow yarding, values tor heavy wethers being down by up to 2s a head and for lighter wethers and ewes by Is to Is fid. As the sale progressed, however, there was a distinct improvement, and until four-filths of the penning was disposed of values practically recovered the drop of the earlier stages. There were some passings in the earlier part of the sale, and also in the final stages, when values slipped. Outside orders, particularly from the West Coast, helped to maintain the soundness of the market. Values were as under:— Extra prime heavy wethers, to 37s lOd. Prime heavy wethers, 29s to. 335. Prime medium-weight wethers. 27s to 2te fid.

Ordinary wethers, 24s fid to 26s fid. Light wethers, to 245. Extra prime heavy ewes, to 375. Prime heavy ewes, 25s to 275. Prime medium-weight ewes, 22s fid to 24s fid Ordinary ewes, 20s to 225.

FAT CATTLE The entry comprised 670 head, compared with 525 last week. A few good Pens were sold earlier in the sale at a slight recession on the values of last week, but from well before mid-day until after 3 o’clock the market was monopolised by the selling of single cows, numbering about 250 head. This class formed an abnormal proportion of the entry, and the greater proportion of them should have been relegated to the store Pens. The "draw” of the market placed tno quality cattle at the final part of the sale. The cows sold, at a declining market from the outset, but when the good beef was offered in the concluding part of the sale there was a spirited revival, values being fully up to those of last week. Had these cattle been offered earlier in the day, before a number of the butchers had left for the shefep sale, values would probably have shown an advance. The outstanding small draft of the entry comprised five steers from L. J. Grant (Temuka). which made an average of £l9 Ds 6d, the lop price being £2O 12s fid, but a bigger consignment of 20 Hereford cross steers from W. Leonardo (Hickory) sold at the good average of £lßls. Good beef made from 37s 6d to 40s, in cases up to 42s.per 1001 b, heavy 35s 6d to 375, medium 33s- 6d to 355, and inferior down to 275. Values were as under:— Extra prime heavy steers, £l7 as to £2O 12 prim'e heavy steers, £l4 5s to £l6 10s. Medium-weight prime steers, £l3 os to £l4 10s. Ordinary steers, £lO 5s to £l3. VEALERS In view of no sale next week, there was an insufficient entry of vealers to meet butchers’ requirements., All classes were 'again keenly sought for. Y vealers and suckers were in particuiai iy short supply, and met with a strong market. Heavy runners were forward m fair numbers, but owing to the slacking in the beef market these were not keemy inquired for. There was a complete clearance, the sale maintaining quite a good tone throughout.

STORE CATTLE The entry in the store cattle section comprised a number of straight coloured lines, the market being better supplied in the matter of fattening sorts than for some time. The market was weaker in sympathy with the fat cattle market for inferior sorts, and the feed outlook on account of the dry weather had anothei depressing influence. Medium cows, £4 10s to £6. Aged and inferior cows, 35s to £3 10s. Best heifers, to £lO. Medium heifers. £5 to £6 10s. Inferior. £3 ife to £4 10s.

FAT PIGS There was an exceptionally heavy entry of norkers, but the quality was very mixed. This affected the sale, and caused prices to be irregular throughout. The sale opened much easier than a week ago, and continued at the lower level throughout the first Part of the auctiom From then on values Improved to last week’s level? and the improvement was maintained to the end of the sale. An export buyer helped considerably in maintaining a sound market. Baconers were forward in much larger numbers, and although the sale was slightly easier comnetition was keen throughout. Choppers were in medium supply, and sold on a par with last week's rates. Values were;— ._ Light porkers, 4Js 6d to 47s Cd. Medium porkers. 49s (3d to 53s fid. Heavy porkers. 54s fid t° 4 s 6d.
