MAGISTRATE’S COURT
WEDNESDAY (Before Mr E. C, Levvey, S.M.) CHARGES OF THEFT.
Nine charges of theft of articles, including a suit of clothes, a bicycle, and a cornet, were admitted by Frederick John Stevens, a french-polisher, aged 29 for whom Mr D. J. Hewitt appeared. The articles involved were a suit valued at £7 10s. the property of Frederick John Bradley; a bicycle valued at £9 7s 6d, the property of Frank Myer; a clock, a pair of opera glasses, some jewellery, and two packs of cards, of a total value of £6 10s, the property of Eleanor Kate Marlow; some stock from Wise Bros., valued at 6s 9d; a cornet, valued at £.7, the property of the Defence Department; a leather brief bag valued at £l, the property of George Robert Anderson: a pocket wallet, a driving licence, and a warrant of fitness for a car, the articles being the property of Benjamin Howard Carter Rumble, and valued at 10s 6d; a pair of butt hinges, valued at Is, the property of some person or persons unknown; and three bicycle lamps, of a total value of 8s 9d, for whom owners have not been found. Detective-Sergeant T. E. Holmes said that the thefts had been committed in a period of seven months. Stevens had been admitted to probation for two years in 1928 on a theft charge, and was serving a sentence of 30 days in default of payment of a fine for an assault of which he had been convicted in September. All the property had been recovered, except 25s which he had received when pawning the cornet. “I know quite a lot about him; he was a very unsatisfactory probationer,” said the Probation, Officer. ’ Stevens was convicted on all charges. On each of two of them he was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, the sentences to be cumulative, and on the others he was discharged. TRADING AFTER HOURS
A charge against Robert Cole, a coal merchant, of trading after the prescribed hour on a half-holiday was adjourned to November 17, to allow defendant to bring witnesses.

R. E. Pratley, who did not . appear on a charge of driving a motor-car in Charles street without due care and attention, was convicted and fined £5 and ordered tb pay Court costs. For placing a motor-car so that it encroached on the footpath, J. Brow n was convicted and ordered to pay costs. Henry Rodger Hadfield, who pleaded guilty to a charge of driving a motorcycle on the Main North road while in a state of intoxication, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence i£ called on within two years.
