WHALERS’ RACE TO ANTARCTIC
THREE HUNDRED SHIPS TAKE PART CAPE TOWN, November 2. The whalers’ annual Antarctic race has begun by the dispatch of high-speed scouts to “peg out” the best grounds. It is anticipated that 300 ships will participate, of which 40 Norwegian vessels are docked at Cape Town. They intend to operate farther east than ever before in the Ross Sea. A German factory ship of 16,000 tons is going direct to the West Indies, then southwards to meet the catchers. The new international agreement, to which Japan is not a party, withdrew the restriction on the number of catches and the limits of the size of whales that may be caught.
