DEMOLITION OF POLICE HOUSE WORK AT RANGIOKA A beginning has been made with the demolition of the old house in Perceval street, Rangiora, the property of the Police bepartment. The house is of concrete and was built in idle eariy days of the town by Mr J. J- Robinson for his own use. It is believed to hav e been the first house in Perceval sheet, and is being demolished at the request of the Borough Council. Unemployment c{y men who have been employed under The’No 13 scheme at Waikuku Beach, have finished their eight weeks work and six others have begun. Men employed under the scheme at the Rangiora Borough School will finish their period next week. . Following is the unemployment allocation for the district next week, this week’s totals being given m parenthesis: —Sustenance,. 85 (92), No. o scheme, 27 (29). There have been three registrations of unemployed at the Government Employment Bureau this week. Double Stock Market As there will be no stock market at Rangiora on Tuesday week, November 9, the sale next Tuesday will be a double one.
AUSTRALIAN SPORTSMEN AT AKAROA SUCCESSFUL FISHING EXPEDITION The splendid catch of over 100 ted cod in an hour and a half was obtained by a party of four visitors from Australia who visited Akaroa for the day on Thursday. They went on a fishing expedition off Wainui in Mr W. Pool s launch Orari and were delighted with their trip. Mothers’ Union There was a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Akaroa branch of the Mothers’ Union, including four visitors from Wainui. Mrs Petrie presided, and Archdeacon A. J. Petrie officiated at the devotional service. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs H. Woodill in the sudden death of her grandson. Mrs Petrie reported that Mrs Hands, Christchurch, would address the November meeting, and it was decided to ask all St. Peter’s Church members to attend. An address was given by Archdeacon Petrie on spiritual healing, and he was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. The hostesses were Mesdames T. Masefield, B, W. Henning, and F. L Kearney. Obituary Mr Walter M. Mitchell, who was taken to Christchurch on Wednesday, died in the Christchurch Hospital yesterday. He had been unwell for the last year. He had lived at Akaroa for about 10 years and was a lorry driver for Messrs Ramsay’s Motors. For some time he was also engaged in fishing. He leaves a widow and six young children, who live at Balguerie street, Akaroa.
KOWAI ATHLETIC CLUB ANNUAL MEETING HELD The Kowai Athletic Sports Club held its annual meeting recently. The balance-sheet, which showed a satisfactory credit of £44 8s 6§d, was read. KOWAI COUNTY COUNCIL
_At the last meeting of the Kowai County Council there were present Councillors H. May (chairman), M. B. Forrester, J. B. Bowker, E. A. Payne, J. Ashworth, B. Peach, and D. McLean. As the usual monthly meeting in November will clash with the Christchurch show day, it was decided to hold the next meeting on Monday, November 8. A letter was received from the New Zealand Counties' Association about local body amalgamation, asking for the council's views on the , effect of dual control brought about by the State taking control of portion of the highways; the incidence of rating; the basis of franchise; the loan indebtedness, and any other phase of local body government affecting the county. It was left in the hands of the chairman and clerk to forward the council's Views. ] Correspondence was received from the secretary of the- Federation of Health Camps, advising that health stamps would again be available this year. It was decided to purchase £2 worth of health stamps. The outside work for the last month was principally the shingling o£ Ram i Paddock road, Amberley, and Leithfield streets and the Ashley-Amberley highway. The grader had been out 15 days, nine days on highways and six days on county roads. The financial statement showed receipts since last meeting to be £249 15s 4d. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £215 13s 6d. There was a debit balance of £l2 18s lid. OMIHI LODGE .MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Omihi Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., was held in the lodge room recently. The N.G., Bro. E. Sloss, presided. All sick pay due was passed for payment. The white and blue 'degrees were confered upon five members. The N.G. reported that the lodge visited the Ldyal Cheviot Lodge on October 9. A card tournament was held. ■ :

MEMORIAL TO CAPTAIN HEMPLEMAN INSCRIPTION CONSIDERED AT COUNCIL MEETING The following proposed inscription to the Hempleman memorial at Peraki Bay was forwarded to the Akaroa County Council at its meeting on Thursday:—"Erected to commemoiate the centenary of the first white settlor in the South Island, Captain George Hempleman, who established a whaling station at Peraki in 1835. Cr. C. B, Thacker, the chairman, presided. , . In reply to the appeal from the federation of Health Camps, it was decided to procure a quantity of stamps. . ,• The application by Messrs Meaies, Williams and Holmes for the transfer of a 10-acre council reserve at Pigeon Bay from Mr J. M. Duxbury to Mr T A. McKellar was approved. A letter of thanks from the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) for contributions towards the King George V Memorial Fund was received. . , That the wages paid to the council s employees were high enough now without the council’s having to find transport to depots, payment for work on wet days, and allowance for travelling time, was the opinion expressed by Cr. Hayes. The county clerk said that he had not been able to obtain a clear definition on the matter. The men also wanted to know. The date of expiry of the drivers’ and labourers’ awards was approaching, and the council was asked to examine both awards and forward any suggested amendments. Mr C. Stewart, county ■ clerk, said the award was based on walking, half an hour being allowed for walking two miles to the depot. It was not clear whether the council should pay for motor-cycles. It was also considered a dangerous practice for the council employees to graze their horses on the roadside where they were working, but it was stated that not many horses were now used. The receipts since last meeting were £790 6s 2d, and accounts passed for payment amounted to £1260 12s Bd. Cr. Haylock reported that the lighthouse road was now negotiable for trucks, and it was decided to have the bad corner in Balguerie road attended to. It was resolved to procure Australian bush box timber for repairing the Wainui and Takamatua bridges. The acceptance of tenders to be called for repairs at the foreman’s house was left to Crs. Vogan and Hayward. It was decided to call tenders for cocksfoot on the county roads.
LODGE OUTING AT KAIKOURA Officers of the North Canterbury District, M.U., 1.0.0. F., visited the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge, Kaikoura, last week-end. There were also present the judges for the ritual efficiency competition, Bro. H. W. Gourlay, P.D.G.M., and Bro. L. W. Bigley, P.G. The D.G.M. presented Bro. M. G. Perrin, P.G., of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge, a framed certificate for services to his lodge. Bro. Perrin thanked the members for their gift. ® Bro. F. Barnes, 1.P.D.G.M., thanked the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge for its support during his term as a district officer. On the Sunday morning the members attended a church parade at the Sacred Heart Church, about 80 members assembling. The Rev. Father Devlin conducted the service. In the afternoon the visitors were taken for a drive to Ohau Point, and in the evening a Past Grands Lodge meeting was held. D.G.M. Bro. W. J. Teale presided.
FOOTBALL CLUB DANCE ' AT KAIKOURA The Kaikoura Football Club held its wind-up dance in the Drill Hall, there being a very large attendance. Mrs Sabiston’s dance band „ supplied the music and Miss Monica Mackle and members of the Hawarden orchestra played extras. Messrs B. Borthwick and F. Taylor were the masters of ceremonies. During the interval Mr L. Shannon, president of the Kaikoura Football Club, thanked those present for the generous support given to the club during the season. Mr S. Maxwell (Culverden) presented the trophies won during the season. CHEVIOT COLLIE DOG CLUB The annual meeting of the Cheviot Collie Dog Club was held, with Mr T. CULYERDEN CLUB ANNUAL MEETING HELD • At a meeting held in the Culverden Hall, Mr W. J. McMillan presided. It was unanimously decided to revive the Culverden Cricket Club. The balance-sheet showed that there was a small credit balance in the Post Office savings account. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patroness, Mrs D. Rutherford; patron, Mr W. O. SALVATION ARMY AT KAIAPOI PADDY’S MARKET HELD A substantial sum was realised for the Kaiapoi Salvation Army Corps Self-denial fund, at a Paddy’s Market held in the Orange Hall, Kaiapoi, on Thursday afternoon and evening. In the evening a concert organised by Bandmaster N. Coffin and members of the Christchurch City Band was well received. The stall-holders wore:—Cake, Mesdames P. Dodge, R. Kirk, W. Green, 0. SALE OF WORK AT KAIAPOI A sale of work organised by the congregation of the Kaiapoi Baptist Church was held in the Foresters’ Hall, Kaiapoi, yesterday. There was a good attendance during the afternoon and evening, and goods on the various stalls met with a ready sale. In the evening a concert programme was given by Miss Rogers’s pupils (Rangiora). Those who assisted at the stalls were as follows:—Work, Mesdames W. H. A. Vickery, M. Greenwood, J. Cox, Misses I. Joy, and E. Ching; cake, Mrs Attwell and Miss Laurie; sweets, Mrs P. Wells and Miss U. Baylis; advertising, Mrs Hector Fowler; refreshments, Mesdames W. McPartlin, J. Jones, C. .Joy, and G. Garrett. LABOUR DAY GALA AT DARFIELD To augment the library building
fund an energetic committee arranged a successful gala, which was held in the Darfteld Memorial Hall on Labour Day. Mr C. H. Adams, chairman of the Malvern County Council, in declaring the gala open, spoke of the need for a library in the district, and congratulated the committee on its work to raise the necessary funds. A variety of stalls and side-shows did brisk business throughout the day and a dance was held in the evening the music being supplied by the Kimberley melody players. The funds of the library building will benefit by more than £IOO. The following were the winners of competitions—Guessing-weight of sheep Miss J. Gillanders. Messrs D. McMillan. J. Green, and H. Miss Mollie Coffey (Kirwee) 2; basket, Mrs Arnesen. PRESENTATIONS AT DARFIELD f " Mr and Mrs J. Painter, who are leaving Darfield to live in Christchurcb were recently entertained at a social evening by their friends. Mr D. Gillanders welcomed the guests and spoke of their splendid work during their 25 years in the district, and on behalf of residents and friends, presented them with two fireside chairs. Other speakers were Mrs D. McMillan, Mrs A. A. Stott (Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union), Mrs Wm. Tritt (Red Cross Society), and Mr S. Oldridge (swimming and school committees). Items were given by Mrs A. Hart, Miss Betty Johnston, Messrs. H. H. Barrs. and Mr J. R. Cullen. Music for dancing was supplied by the Kimberley trio. On Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs H. Barker. Mrs Painter was met by members of the women's bridge circle, and presented with a hand-bag. Mr H. Holland, who is leaving Darfield, was met by members of the Darfield branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, of which he has been secretary for two years, and was presented with a handsome suitcase by the president (Mr M. CONCERT AT SEFTON The Sefton glee singers held their annual concert in the Sefton Public* Hall. The first half of the programme was as follows:—Glees "Sweet and Low" and "Hail Smiling Morn"; xylophone solo Mr W. Lintott; violin solo, Mrs Rinaldi; tap dance, Miss J. Forgeson; talking doll, Mr W. Lintott. The second half consisted of an operetta, "On Board the H.M.S. Poliflor," played by the members of the Glee Singers. PRESENTATION AT WEST EYRETON A tennis afternoon was held recently at the West Eyreton courts to enable members to say good-bye to Mrs G. Jackson and Misses Margaret and Enid Jackson, who will shortly leave the district. Mr R. Bennett, president of the club, thanked the guests of honour for their services to the club and presented Mrs Jackson with a crystal salad bowl and Misses Margaret and Enid Jackson with crystal sweet dishes.
HALDON CLUB’S SOCIAL To mark the close of the season, the Haldon Miniature Rifle Club held a social evening. There was a large attendance. The evening was spent in games, community singing, and a mock court. Competitions were won by Messrs C. W. Taylor and W. Oakley, Misses I. More, Chambers, E. Nelson, and Mr E. Ridgen. Mr Wood sang two songs. Mr F. Gough was the master of ceremonies. The patron (Mr Gilbert Grigg) presented the trophies won during the season. HAWARDEN CLUB The season of the Hawarden Miniature Rifle Club was brought to a close with a very successful dance in the Hawarden Hall recently. Music was supplied by Karl Brocket's orchestra. During the evening trophies won during the season were presented. The J. T. Smellle Memorial Cup for the aggregate was won 6y T. Smellic. Mr J. Shadbolt’s trophy for the most pairs was won by F. J, Bydings. The trophy for the most consecutive bulls was won by J. G. Death. The final night trophy was won by J. W. Heasley, and Mr J. Doak’si trophy was won by S. Davey. Mrs J. Doak’s trophy for the women’s aggregate was won by Mrs J. W. Heasley. Mrs Heasley’s trophy for the final night was won by Miss K. Quigley, and Mr Shadbolt’s trophy for the most pairs was won by Mrs J. W. Heasley.
MALVERN SUB*ASSOCIATION RESULTS OF MATCHES The following were the results of matches in the competitions of the Malvern Cricket Sub-Association: — Greendale 68 (L. Early 18, A. Clinton 19, G. L. Dean 11) lost to Coalgate IJ!3 (W, E. Charles 27, T. Charles 17, D. Pearson 20, C. Pearson 23 not out)'. Bowling for Greendale, Ij. Early took one wicket for 39 runs, C. Adams three for 15, R. Clucas one for 12, E. Frew two for 21, and A. Clinton three for 14. For Coalgate, T, Charles took eight wickets for 19 runs, E. Charles one for 18, and L. Knox one for 27. Sheffield 167 (L. T. Wright 70 retired, F. Jones 22 retired, L. Jenkins 14, D. Humtn 20 retired. A. Baxter 15 not out) beat Hororata 91 (A. Stone 43, E. Betts 12). Bowling for Sheffield, H. Ferguson took seven wickets for 39 runs, L. Hawke two for 13, and F. Gore one for 5. For Hororata, K. Comely took three for 40, A. Stove two for 69, and A. Gossett one for 3. CONCERT AT SPRINGFIELD The annual concert in aid of the Springfield swimming bath fund was enjoyed by a large audience. The programme consisted of choruses, violin solos, songs, sketches, elocutionary items, and a play entitled “The Bath Room Door.” The following took part: Mesdames F. Joines, G. McElwhiney, .Misses F. Fraser, E. Milliken, J. Saundercock, E. Vaughan, G. and M. Brown, O. Lapthorne, B. Robinson, Messrs C. Belcher, E. Milliken, E. Saundercock, W. Bruere, and T. Munro. At the conclusion of the concert, Mr G. L. Popple asked Mr and Mrs Saundercock to accept from the club a smoker’s set Beatrice Robinson presented Mrs Saundercock with a bouquet.
