Backers' Bad Start The moderately fancied All Bingen hrniicht off a mild surprise in tho wanemate Handicap and won decisively from Worth? a Lu: C an outsider whe»PaW double flmiroQ for a place. All Bingen reai-neu the front quicWly. and was always clear. !H%l a or^d^an« c wL y n& Minting exhibition. Pirate's Last was a moderate third, and the favourite Querida, who was checked early and afterwards made several mistakes was fourth, followed by Colleen Murphy, Gold Kip. PinK Lady, and Native Worry. Querida displayed speed when she was trotting and might have been dangerous if she had gone steadily. Lady Bunker. Red Eagle, Lady Musk, and Heather Glow lost the r chances by failing to begin well and Waingake did not go steadily. A Division Race The two divisions of the Improvers' Handicap were won by the Progeny of Jack Potts, Chili Bean taking the first and Bexlev Girl the second. Chili Bean followed Bronze Queen for most of the journey in the first division and then unwound a nice burst of speed to have the race In hand half-way down the straight. Chili Bean is a good-looking pacer and he clipped 18 seconds off his handicap time. Adversity, always well placed, made a creditable showing for third, and the each-

way favourite, Axminster, was a close fourth, followed by Worthy Song, Worthy Quest, and Sequoia. Axminster lost a little ground at the start, otherwise he might have been closer. It was with a brilliant dash over the last three furlongs that Bexley Girl won the second division. Kete Kura made most of the running from Captain Scott, and they were at the head of the field along the back, where Tommy McElwyn, Kewpie's Queen, Uenuku, Roma Girl, and Bexley Girl were closest of the others. Near the mile post Bexley Girl flashed up on the outside, and she was in front at the turn to win easily from Kewpie's Queen, who battled on gamely. Captain Scott was a creditable third, and Kete Kura was fourth, followed by Roma Girl, Uenuku, and Tommy McElwyn. Bexley Girl outpaced the field when asked for an effort and displayed fine speed. Lady Fame in Form Pulling to the front after going a mile, j Lady Fame stayed on soundly to score narrowly in the Jellicoe Handicap, for which Kewpie's King and Nervie's Last were the favourites. Kewpie's King led for a mile and then gave way to Lady Fame and Noble Prince. Lady Fame showed the way into the straight to Kewpie's King, Our McKinney. Kenworthy, and Nervie's Last. Lady Fame ran on solidly to win by a neck from Kenworthy, who finished strongly to beat Kewpie's King by a head. Nervie's Last was another head away fourth, just in front of Gold Dredge, who skipped near the post. Our McKinney was next. Noble Prince, tiring, finished well back. It was a fine finish between the first five horses, who sprinted home in fine style. Favourite Succeeds The Crocus—Musketeer bracket was supported down to a short price on both machines for the Parnell Handicap, and Crocus registered a good performance by winning after losing a lot of ground early. Lucky Love, Sir Frank, and Charteris Bay drew clear of the field in the first halfmile. Sir Frank and Charteris Bay then going on in the lead. Sir Frank and Crocus, who had moved up smartly, were the leaders into the straight from Handicapper, Charteris Bay, and Lucky Love. Crocus always held a slight advantage in I the straight, and won with a little in 'hand from Sir Frank, who battled on gamely. Handicapper was a length and a half away third, and Musketeer was fourth. Next to finish were Spessiva. Bismuth, Lucky Love, and Charteris Bay. The winner's performance was impressive. Unhoppled Trotters What promised to be a good finish in the Mountain Handicap was spoiled when Native Tree broke just before reaching the home turn and interfered with Kuini, Young Rodney, and Audo Patch, who were stopped almost to a walk. Native Tree took charge after going a mile, and at the time she broke near the turn was being challenged by Kuini, Young Rodney, and Audo Patch, and after the mix-up Imposter was left clear to go on and win from Native Tree, who broke again near the post. Kuini was half a length away third, and Audo Patch was fourth. It is difficult to say what would have won but for the occurrence near the turn, but it looked as if Kuini would have been hard to beat. A Promising Pacer The each-way favourite, Grattan Girl, was victorious in the October Handicap. Tangaroa and Bedford broke up at the start, and when the field had settled down Hori Bingen was in command from Atarau King, Queenie Direct, and Roman Chief, with Grattan Girl near the rear. Hori Bingen carried on the running alpns the back, and was first into the straight from Grattan Girl, who had moved up smartly on the outside. True Trust, and Gloster. Grattan Girl then went on and won easily by a length and a half from Gloster, who paid a fine price for second. True Trust was two lengths away third, and Kaitawa. wide out, was fourth, followed by Hori Bingen and Queenie Direct. Grattan Girl was slow away, but recorded a solid performance, going 12 3-5 seconds faster than she was handicapped to do. Another Good Dividend The favourite, Our Peggy, missed a place in the Stewards' Handicap, which Compass won at a good price. Munga Tangi was quickly prominent, but gave way after qoing a quarter-mile to Argolis, Our Peggy, and Blandford. Passing the stands Blandford was in command, amhaU a mile from home he was making play fiom Our Peggy, Argolis. Gay Sister, and Munea Tangi, with Compass moving up fasten the outside. Compass was first into the straight from Argolis, Munga Tangi, and Our Peggy, and in a great from home. A Successful Trainer F. J.
