Mrs A. Gi Handera, president of the Women s Division of the Ar e w Zealand Farmers' Union, presided Mrs Gillanders introduced Mrs H Ellen, of the North Canterbury Electric Power Board, and president of the Eangiora branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, who gave an address on "Electricity and its Uses." Mrs Ellen was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs L. G. Nell, president of the ! Cheviot Women's Institute, then introduced Miss Violet MacMillan, of the Otago University, who addressed the meeting. She spoke of the prevalence of goitre in New Zealand, and emphasised the need for a proportionate amount of iodine in the daily diet. Miss MacMillan was accorded a vote of thanks. OXFORD The Oxford branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union held its annual spring flower show in the Town Hall recently, when there was a large attendance. The display of flowers was a very line one and entries showed a marked increase on the previous year. Mrs Borland (Christchurch) gave a talk on tray and dish gardens. During the afternoon items were contributed by Mesdames D. Kellman, C. Mears, C. E. Johnson, Misses Nancy Mann, W. Magrath, and Iris Pateman. The president (Mrs P. K. Thompson) referred to the loss to the branch of the treasurer (Miss R. Skurr), whose approaching marriage will necessitate her leaving the district. On behalf of the members she presented her w th a handsome frameless mirror. The silver cup given by the Oxford Farmers' Union, for most points in the show, was won by Mrs J. E. H. McGrath. The champion blue ribbon far the premier daffodil was won by Mjss M. Baxter. A special prize for the competitor with most entries in the show and not winning a prize was swarded to Mrs S. McKee. BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Redcliffs branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the Methodist Hall, with Mrs A. Roberts presiding. One new member and several visitors were welcomed. A vote of sympathy was passed with Miss Wyatt in the loss of her sister, members standing in silence. After the business session, a play was read by the drama circle. It was decided to visit the Karitane Hospital in November. Competitions were won as follows: Best bloom, Mrs Roberts 1, Mrs Cooksley 2. Mrs Burch 3; best article from cne yard of cretonne, Miss Jamieson and Mrs Redmayne (equal) 1, Mrs Burch 2. Hostesses for afternoon tea were Mesdames Anderson, Carter, sen., Walters, and Shearman. OKUKU BRANCH The first monthly meeting of the Okuku branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held recently, with the president (Mrs R. Ensor) presiding. Three new members were welcomed. Mrs Ensor gave an interesting talk on cookery. Competitions resulted as follows:—Largest bloom: Mrs Woods 1, Mrs J. McCracken 2, Mrs J. I MOTL'KARARA The monthly meeting of the Motukarara branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held in the Motukarara Hall. Mrs Simmons presided. WOODEND Mrs P. Robinson presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Woodend branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. A vote of sympathy was accorded Mrs L. J. Sheppard. The secretary was instructed to write to Mrs Piper, expressing the branch's sympathy with her in her husband's serioxis illness. An invitation was received to the birthday party of the Kaiapoi Women's Institute. There was on display a number ot articles made by returned soldiers. Gifts for the lepers on Makogai Island were collected from the members present. Mrs Robinson introduced Mrs Collard, of the St. John Ambulance Association, who gave an interesting talk on "First Aid." Competitions resulted as follows: — Best bloom, Mrs J. Ballinger 1, Miss L. Morris 2: man's pullover, Mrs Ballinger 1, Miss Gwen Little 2: jar of marmalade, Mrs F. Cox 1, Mrs H. Robertshaw 2. The hostesses were Mesdames V. Harris, A. H. Johnstone, F. Stott, W. Holmes, H. Hoskins, E. Heney, Misses I. Herridge, and B. Johnstone. ANNIVERSARY OF BROADFIELD To celebrate Its fourth anniversary the Broadfleld branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union held a carnival dance in the Broadfleld Schoolroom. Mrs W. Wallace (president) and Miss E. Boyle (secretay) received the guests, and Stewart's orchestra supplied the music for dancing. Mr C. Wallace played an extra. Winners of novelty dances were Mr and Mrs Millar, Master R. Dowler and Mrs Pearce, Mr L. Corbett and Miss I. Sutherland, Mr T. Guilford and Miss R. Gallagher. Representatives from the Motukarara division and the Templeton, Prebbleton, Lincoln, and Ladbrooks Women's Institutes conveyed greetings. Competitions prizes for most points gained in competitions during the year were presented by Mrs Maglaglen (Motukarara) and resulted as follows: —Senior: Mrs M. -Wallace 1, Mrs J. Reid 2, Mrs W. Boyle and Mrs E. Guilford (equal) 3. Juniors: Miss P. Wallace 1. Miss L. Smith 2, Miss P. Guilford 3. Items were given by Miss Ozanne, Mrs Pearce, and Master R. Dowler. Mr R. O. Wheeler was master of ceremonies. DLNSANDEL On Friday evening the Dunsandel branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union entertained the members of the Dunsandel branches of the New Zealand Farmers' Union and the- Young Farmers' Club to a social. At cards the visitors won the aggregate score by a considerable majority. Winners for the women were Mesdames H. WrightJohnson, John Walker, and F. Chamberlain. Mr E. G. Wright won the most points for the men.
