ON WAY TO CYPRUS FAST TIME BEING MADE (Received October 22, 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 22. Miss Jean Batten, who is making an attempt to lower Mr H. F. Broadbent's record for the solo flight from Australia to England, arrived at Basra at 7.30 a.m., Greenwich mean time, and left at 3.10 a.m. for Cyprus. An earlier message stated that Miss Batten arrived at Karachi at 1.40 p.m. on October 21 and left later for Basra. MR BROADBENT STARTS HELD UP BY FOG FOR FOUR DAYS # (Received October 22, 9 p.m.) LONDON, October 22. After being held up by fog for four successive days, Mr H. F. Broadbent started at 5 a.m. to-day on his flight to Australia. The moon was shining brightly as Mr Broadbent started across the aerodrome. His first stop will be Rome. He is flying the same Leopard Moth machine in which he broke the Australia to England record. Mr Broadbent wheeled the machine out of the hangar unaided. He said that he intended to do a good deal of night flying and hoped to accomplish the flight in less than five days. He did not know where he would pass Miss Jean Batten.
