SUPPLY OF DENTAL NURSES
ADVICE TO EDUCATION BOARD NEEDS OF SCHOOLS DISCUSSED AT MEETING That the supply of dental nurses did not yet permit an increase in the school dental service was indicated by the Education Department in a letter received oy the Canterbury Education Board at its meeting yesterday. Mr J. W. Preen presided. The Education Department advised that it had not yet been informed that the supply of dental nurses would permit the increase of the school dental service, and suggested that school committees and other representative bodies wishing to establish treatment centres should be told to apply to the Division of Dental Hygiene. Wellington, or to the District Dental Superintendent, Christchurch. It was resolved to acquaint committees concerned with the contents of the department's memorandum. After discussion in committee it was reported that the board strongly supported the protest made by the residents of the Opawa district against the lack of accommodation in the infant department at Opawa School. It requested the department to take immediate action. Buildings and Equipment It was decided to apply to the Education Department for a grant to%vard a comprehensive* remodelling and rebuilding scheme for Ashburton East. The Waltham School was added to the list for painting. In reply to the request of the Lytielton committee for attention to a concrete wall, it was decided that no action should be taken, as the board was satisfied that the wall was sate at present. Consideration of painting the exterior of the Beckenham School, and of providing new tables and chairs fcr the new classroom at Elmwood, was deferred. Requests from the New Brighton and North New Brighton committees for materials for concrete cricket pitches were declined. It was decided to congratulate the Timaru South School on the excellent nursery work done last year, whereby 150 shrubs were raised from cuttings and made available for distribution to South Canterbury Schools. M. King, sole teacher; Otaio: Mr C. R. Tilly, sole teacher; Phillipstown: Miss E. M. Christie, assistant mistress; Roto Manu: Miss I R. E. Jones, sole teacher; St Albans: Mr C. A. Caigou, headmaster; Taylorville: Mr A. E. Mahon, head teacher; Temuka District High School: Miss RA. Gorton, Sec-. A mistress; Te Pirita: Miss F. M. Morland, sole teacher: Woolston: Mr F. J. Mottram. headmaster; Leithfield: Miss L. FFraser, sole teacher; Oxford District High. School: Miss .K. M. Alley, assistant mistress. The resignations of Mr F. E. O'Flynn, head teacher at Hornby, Miss C. E. Sinclair, relieving teacher at Linwood North, and Mr J. K Alford, assistant at Phillipstown, were accepted.
