FURTHER DROP IN ROLL

WESTPORT TECHNICAL SCHOOL SUCCESS IN WINTER SPORTS A further drop in the roll number at the Westport Technical High School was reoorted by the principal (Mr J. Metson*) a t the monthly meeting of the board of managers held |n the County Chambers on Thursday night. The roll is now 108. T xj There were present: Messrs J. H. Harkness <chairman). A. Hunter. T. Mumm. J. V/. Jopo, C. Garvey, T. Parfitt, J. M. Robertson, F. Knight, and the principal and secretary (Mr J. Metson). The principal’s report stated that the term would be a long one, with public examinations at the end for which the following candidates would sit; — Training College entrance 4, Public Service entrance 7. senior free place 2, matriculation and school certificate 5. The Education Department was making allowance in the various examinations for the fact that many pupils had lost time owing to the infantile paralysis epidemic. The season for winter games was practically over, and the school teams had had remarkable success, the report continued. The boys’ football team had played 11 competition games and won them all. The team had won the Phillips Cup and was leading for the Foote c hield Four intcr-school games had also been played, the only loss being against Christchurch Technical College and the school now held the Newman Shield for the first time. The success was due to the keenness of the bovs and the coaching of Mr J. McDonald. The girls' A basketball team had had a very strenuous season and finished second to the Old Girls team, and the B team won every game in the lower grade. Mr A. Watson coached the teams and Miss Evison was in charge of them at all matches. The classes in the evening school were the same as in the second term, except that one class in dressmaking had been cut out. There were several new enrolments for the term, but several pupils, mostly first-year boys, had forfeited their free places owing to bad attendance. After a discussion about quotations received for repairing the tennis courts it was decided to request the Public Works Department Assistant Engineer at Westport (Mr A. C. Bascand) to undertake the work at a cost not exceeding £137. Messrs Perfitt and A. Phillips were appointed the visiting committee for the month, CLAIM FOR DAMAGES FAILS ACCIDENT IN DULLER GORGE Gibbs Transport. Ltd. (Mr M. B. Scully) successfully defended a claim lor damages brought by Ethel Rose Evison. a school teacher, of Westport ■ Mr H. Lovell), as a result of "an accident in the Fuller Gorge recently. The sum of £l6 13s was claimed for damage allegedly received by a motorcar owned by the plaintiff through a motor-lorry belonging to the defendant company, backing into it. After lengthv evidence had been completed on Thursday, the Magistrate (Mr Raymond Fcrner, S.M.) held that the driver of the lorry had not been negligent because he had taken every reasonable precaution to ascertain if there wa? anything behind him before backing the lorry. The Magistrate also held that the plaintiff's car was in a position from which it could have been withdrawn. Judgment was given for the defendant company with costs and witness's expenses. A charge against Neil Mouat of being the owner of stock allegedly found wandering at large on the main highway at Punakaiki was dismissed after the Magistrate had heard the evidence of the defendant and a drover who, it was claimed, was in charge of the stock. The Magistrate said there was a reasonable doubt and the defendant was entitled to the benefit of it. LICENSED VICTUALLERS’ ASSOCIATION The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Greymouth Licensed Victuallers’ Association: —President, Mr A. Beban; vicepresident, Mr J. McTaggart; treasurer, Mr J. Gieseking; secretary, Mr F. J. Johnson; committee, Messrs C. McKechnie. W. Wells, J. MacLeod, J. Ryan, and G. Hill. ST. JOHN’S FLOWER SHOW AT WESTPORT An attractive display of cut flowers, in which daffodils predominated, was seen at St. John's annual flower show which opened in St. John's Hall, Westport, on Thursday. The championship bloom was exhibited by Mrs Stephens. The Stowell Cup was won by Mr Downard with 56 points. Mr T. Rogers was second with 37 points and Mrs Stephens third with 22 points. CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF AT WESTPORT The Westport Ladies’ Golf Club senior and intermediate championships were completed on the Kawatiri links on Tnursday afternoon. The senior final played over 36 holes resulted in Mrs B. Seyb beating Miss Elva Slee, 9 up and 7. In the intermediate finals, Mrs G. Roberts beat Miss Jessie Atkinson, Bup and 7. Both this year’s champions are newcomers to the district, and this is the first season they have been members of the Westport Club. PAKIHI LAND ROADING Further employment for 12 men on ihe pakihi land developmental areas near Westport will be provided as the result of an additional grant of £SOO made by the Government for reading purposes. Advice to this effect has been received by the county chairman (Mr D. J. Archer) from the Hon. P. C. Webb, Acting-Minister for Labour. LIGHT VAN COLLIDES WITH RAIL-CAR A collision between the HokltikaGreymouth rail-car and a light delivery van driven by Mr A. A. Ironside occurred on the New River combined rail and traffic bridge on Thursday afternoon. The van, which was travelling in the same direction, swerved to avoid the rail-car but was struck a glancing blow which badly dented the rear mudguard. MUSIC EXAMINATIONS SUCCESS OF HOKITIKA PUPILB I The following are the results ol the Grammar of Music examinations held in Hokitika in July. All of the candidates, who were pupils of Miss M.
