ELIMINATION OF LEVEL CROSSINGS

PROGRAMME TO BE HASTENED [From Our Parliamentary Reporter] WELLINGTON, September 17. Outlining the progress that has been made with the elimination of level crossings throughout the country, the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) stated to-day, that because of the appalling loss of life on level crossings the Government had decided to expedite its programme of elimination. Although there were 530 level crossings on main highways. o£ which 250 were considered of sufficient importance to warrant attention, the progress made to date was 15 completed, 74 in hand, 60 under design, and 54 under survey or investigation. Those yet to be dealt with numbered 47. Mr Semple drew attention to the fact that certain delay had been caused by the slow delivery of steel supplies, which were very hard to obtain.
