FOREIGN MACHINERY FOR PUBLIC WORKS
RECENT ALTERATION IN TARIFF INFORMATION SOUGHT [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 14. Information about the circumstances of the purchase by the Government of foreign machinery for use on public works contracts was sought by Mr J. Hargest (National, Awarua) in notice of a question addressed to the Minister for Customs (the Hon. W. Nash) in the House of Representatives today. t Mr Hargest sought an explanation of a Gazette notice published last April authorising the alteration of five items on the tariff list from the general to the British preferential rate. Previously these items had been subject to a duty of 25 per cent., and now they were admitted duty free. Mr Hargest also asked if there was any justification for singling out for special preference one group of American road-making machines, the agencies for which were held almost exclusively by one New Zealand firm of importers.
