OUTLET TO LAKE FORSYTH
_ + GOVERNMENT OFFER DISCUSSED POSITION OF WAIREWA COUNTY COUNCIL The progress of the negotiations between the Government and the Wairewa County Council about the proposal to make a permanent outlet to lake Forsyth was discussed at the last meeting of the council. The final decision was that a deputation should go to Wellington to discuss the proposal. The Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) wrote to the meeting discussing the scheme, in reply to the council's letter of July 29. He stated that full consideration had been given the proposal, and the Government was prepared to proceed with the work. The chairman said he had been in touch -with Messrs T. H. McCombs, M.P., H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., and with the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage;. He knew that the council would not agree to the - Government taking over both reserves, as the council wanted to retain Price's reserve. Mr McCombs had considered that the chairman should go to Wellington when Parliament opened and see Mr Semplo. The chairman stated that the ratepayers would not agree to the £SOOO loan if both reserves were taken over by the Government, and had said definitely that the council would not accept the cfer. The council then went into committee to discuss the position further. The chairman finally reported that he, with Mr P. R. Climie, organiser of the Canterbury Progress League, would go to Wellington to try to complete the proposal satisfactorily with the Government and the Minister.
