WHEAT VARIETY TRIALS

CLIMATIC EFFECTS Two investigations into the effect of local climatic conditions on a number of varieties of wheat were carried out last season by the Department of Agriculture at Weston and at Duntroon, in the Waitaki County. The varieties sown were Cross Seven, Tainui. Jurnbuck. Lin Calel, and Beneubbin. S. S. Tuscan was put down as a control. The experiment was carried out on undulating clay loam with a clay sub subsoil, and the sowing took place on August 25 of last year. The seed was treated with 2oz j of copper carbonate to the bushel, and j sown with lewt of superphosphate to, the acre. The crop was harvested on February 16 1937. At that date the S.S. Tuscan was slightly green, but sufficiently matured to harvest. The Cross Seven was dead ripe and the Tainui and Jurnbuck in the same condition, but in both cases hessian fly v/as present and the straw had been much damaged by wind. The Lin Calel was ripe and ready for cutting, but there was some hessian fly present. The Bencubbin was dead ripe, but the straw was very brittle and severely damaged by hesI sian fly and severe winds. The following were the yields nr bushels an acre:—

At Duntroon, where the soil conditions were the same the sowing took place on June 9 and 10, 1936. The Jumbuck, Tainui, and Bencubbin varieties were harvested on January 13 and 15, and the remainder on February 1. The Bencubbin was ripe and ready for cutting on January 6, and was fairly badly shaken, and the Jumbuck, which was ready for cutting four days later, was slightly shaken. The Tainui was ripe on January 13, and had been less affected by shaking. The following were the yields in

A cow owned at Walton, Felixstowe (England), was served by a Jersey bull and, three weeks later, by a Friesian. Recently, according to a Home stock paper, she gave birth to a Jersey-cross calf, and three weeks later, to a Friesian cross. Both she and her calves are doing very well. “The Press” Classified Advertisements are read at the breakfast table, and are sure to deliver results during the day—l2 words Is, 3 insertions 2s 6d.
