(trSITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) SYDNEY, September 14. It was announced at a meeting of the New South Wales Rugby Union that the profits from the recent tour of the Springboks' Rugby team amounted to £1615. SENIOR GRADE COMPETITION OLD BOYS BRACKETED WITH UNIVERSITY PAYNE TROPHY MATCH NOT TO BE HELD THIS YEAR The bracketing of High School Old Boys and University as the winners of the senior competitioru..was approved by the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last night. Tin's decision was made after the committee had been advised that University could not field a team for another match with Old Boys, the suggestion having been made that the teams should meet in a mid-week fixture on September 22. This is the first time two teams have been bracketed as winners of the union's senior competition. It was the recommendation of the competitions committee that another attempt be made to decide the competition by a mid-week match. At the conclusion of the second and final round of the competition, botli sides were equal at the (op of the championship ladder, having drawn 3-all in the key match of the second round. Last Saturday the teams met again, and once more they drew. 3-all. Reporting lor the competitions committee. Mr E. V. Phillips said that the committee considered the championship should be decided by playing another match. It had been thought that bracketing the teams would be the best solution, but it was understood that the teams would be willing to meet again. Inquiries showed, however, that University would not be able to play another match. It was stated by one of the University Club's delegates (Mr J. K. Moloney) that University would not have more than 11 of its men available. I'aynn Trophy Match After deciding to bracket the teams, the committee considered what action
it would take about the Payne Trophy match, held annually between the leading Otago and Canterbury teams. “There is only one thing, to do.” said the president (Dr. W. S. Seed). “We can only advise Otago that we have bracketed two teams as winners of our competition, and the match cannot be played.” Dr. Seed’s suggestion was adopted without comment. The representative match between West Coast and Canterbury will be the main fixture at Lancaster Park on Saturday. The referee will be Mr V. A. Beaumont. A curtain-raiser, to begin at 1.15 p.m., will be played between Christchurch and Sydenham, as the concluding match of the undcr-18 grade. The referee will be Mr S. Hollander and the touch judges Messrs L. E. Clemens and H. Marks. A match' for the Jones-Davy Cup will be played on the west ground at Lancaster Park, commencing at 1.15 p.m.. between the Ashburton third grade representatives and the High School Old Boys fourth grade team.
