The car, which was being driven by George Arthur Kirner, of Kingsley street, Christchurch, was going west along the road, when apparently a tyre burst, and it capsized into the loose shingle at the side of the bitumen surface and then rolled right over on to its wheels. Roy Percival Carson, a single man, a linesman employed by the Post and Telegraph Department at Kaitaia, was taken to hospital with a bullet in the head. Carson was riding in a motor-car driven by Cecil Maxwell, a telegraphist at Kaitaia, and alighted to take from the car a rifle which had been dismantled, the stock being wrapped in an overcoat. The barrel slipped on to the road. Apparently there was a cartridge in the breech, which contact with the road caused to discharge. The bullet passed through Carson's arm and entered his face just under the nose, and lodged in his head. Hopes are held for his recovery. DROWNED IN FLOODED RIVER (PSESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
