TASMAN AIR SERVICE
DATE OF COMMENCEMENT UNCERTAIN [From Our Parliamentary Reporter] WELLINGTON, September 13. That there were many considerations to be taken into account before a start could be made with an air service across the Tasman was emphasised by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) in, an interview this evening. Mr Savage said he did not know when the service would be inaugurated, nvr did he think anyone else was in a position to say when it would commence.
"The sooner we come to a final decision the better it will be for all concerned," said the Prime Minister, "but there are many considerations, including that of the type of machine to be used. Arrangements have to be made which involve Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand, and this all takes time. In the meantime New Zealand has to put up with the irregular arrival o'f air mail from Australia dispatched by Imperial -Airways. The authorities in the Commonwealth send it by the first steamer available, and if there is a delay, they are not responsible for it. We cannot expect anything better in the meantime. It is quite possible that the present rearmament programme in Great Britain is holding up the inauguration of the service, but I have no definite information on that point."
