THE CHRISTCHURCH LADIES' CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES JUNIOR CHALLENGE CUP COMPETITION The club championship tournament and annual competition for the junior challenge cup were begun at the Shirley course yesterday, under perfect conditions. The entry for the championship was rather smaller than usual. The holder of the championship, Miss Valmai Fleming, did not defend her title, as she Is at ..aennt in the North Island, but three £s?cXnSton.. Mrs M. H. fed*. Miss Maberley Beadel. and Miss Betty. Butherford, were among the competitors, and two of them entered the third round. There were 29 entries for the junior challenge cup match, the holder of which is Mrs L. B. Scott, who has been absent from Christchurch during most of the golf season, and did not defend the title. Miss Nancy Frater, who was runner-up last year, has since entered the ranks of the seniors. The following were tho results of the championship matches: — First Round—Mrs Butcher beat Mrs T Armstrong 1 up; Mrs G. Kingscote beat Armstrong % 5 aud 4; Miss N . Crater beat Mrs A. E. Loughnan'beat fors M. Bethell. at the nineteenth; Mrs A. C. McKillop beat Miss Fleetwood, 6 and 4. The matches in the junior competition resulted bs follows: ■ First Round—Miss L. Thomson beat Mrs S. P. Godfrey, 4 and 2; Miss N. Firth won from Mrs G. Fleetwood by default; Miss Cameron Smith won from Mrs R. Francis by default; Miss B. Tonkin won from Mrs W. A. C. McDonald bv default; Mrs R. R. BeU beat Miss N. Buchanan, 5 and 4; Mrs Freeth won from Miss J. Donnelly by default; Mrs N. Tineev beat Mrs G. Anderson, 8 and 6r Mrs / H. Grigg beat Miss M. Best, 3 and 2- Mrs G. R. I and 5; Mrs E. C. Frater beat Mrs F. S. Foster, 2 and 1. ! Second Round—Mrs J. S. Middleton beat Miss L. Thomson, 4 and 3; Miss J. Firth beat Miss Cameron Smith, 1 up; Miss Tonkin beat Mrs R. R. Bell, 1 up; Mr* Tingey beat Mrs Freeth, 6 and 4; Mrs Grigg beat Miss N. Firth, 5 and 4; Mrs G. R. Cracroft Wilson beat, Mrs Bonnington, 4 and 2; Mrs G. Turrell beat Mrs Sims, 3 and 4; Mra Frater beat Misa J. Whitcomlfe, 3 and 2. A flag match played in the afternoon was won by Miss R. Cracroft Wilson In the seniors and Mrs P. Stanley Foster in the juniors. Miss Wilson carried the flag to the green of the seventeenth hole and Mrs Foster half-way down the home fairway. The tournament will be continued today, when the third and fourth rounds of both competitions will be completed and a handicap bogey match will be Slayed. To-morrow the finals and a andicap stroke match will be played. TEMPLETON COUNTRY CLUB In the final of the Templeton Country Club's championship, played over the week-end, B. F. Koene won, gaining the championship for the third successive year. His -opponent in the final, which was played over 36 holes, was R. E. Hastie. TEMPLETON COUNTRY CLUB wish to rearrange their programme. Matches appearing on September 10 to be played September 26, matches appearing September 26 to be played September 19. 9158
