WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

LAKESIDE There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Lakeside Women's Institute. Mrs D. Dick presided. Sympathy was expressed with the relatives of Mesdames C. H. Morton and W. J. Barnett Articles for Christmas gifts made by disabled soldiers met with a good sale. Miss G. M. Glanville was thanked for a talk on gardens she had seen during a trip abroad. Competitions, judged by Mrs R. Rodgers and Misses Glanville and Jamieson, resulted:—Vase of flowers, Mrs J. Anderson 1. Mrs J. Whisker 2, Mrs D. Dick 3; article made from sugar-bag, Mrs J. Webster and Miss Graham (equal) 1, Mrs Whisker and Miss R. McLaughlin (equal) 2, Mrs H. Schnelle and Mrs Webster (equal) 3. _ The hostesses were Mesdames c. Lr. Chamberlain, C. Cooper, and Croft, and Misses H. Erickson and P. Chamberlain. / AKAROA The president, Miss E. Le Lievre, presided at the monthly general meeting of the Akaroa Women's Institute. There was a good attendance of members. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs W. Deans, Dominion president, in the death of her motherThe president reported" having planted a kauri tree in the Akaroa domain, and a Coronation oak tree in the French cemetery. She asked members who lived near the domain to take charge of the kauri tree. „Mrs C. Innes and Miss A. Brochene offered A vote of thanks to Mesdames F. C. and W. A. Newton was passed for taking the competitors at the Drama League festival to Christchurch. . A motion of hearty congratulation was passed to the Little River Institute upon taking first place in the "Pioneer Tales" institute competition. Arrangements for the birthday party on September 30 were made. The president reported that the North Canterbury federation president, Mrs Blunden, would be present. It was decided that the Akaroa committee members and Peninsula Institute presidents entertain Mrs Blunden to dinner at "Ilfracombe," before attending the birthday party. Mrs Blunden will be the guest of Mrs F. C. Newton, honorary secretary, during her visit to Akaroa.

The golden thread talks on "famous women' were continued by Miss E. jacobson, who gave an address on the life and work of Gertrude Bell. A debate on "Are Masculine Clothes becoming to Women" was listened to with interest. The negative was taken by Mrs C. Petterson and Miss Norah Gurry, and the affirmative by Mesdames D. Narbey and H. J. Le Lievre. A vote was taken and the winners were Mrs Petterson and Miss N. Curry. Results of competitions were:—Best bloom: Mrs H. J, Le' Lievre and Miss D. Leete (equal) 1, Miss M. Jacobson 2, Mrs R. Bruce 3. Slice of fruit cake: Mrs D. Narbey 1, Mrs E. Glynan 2, Mrs P. G. Riches. 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames W. J. Edginton, H, J. Le Lievre, E. May, and Miss Norah Curry.

LE BON'S BAY

Mrs Thelning presided at the monthly meeting of the Le Bon's Bay Women's Institute. Mrs C. W. H. Crotty judged the competitions and made the following awards:—Knitted art'cle or articles from 4oz wool: Miss J. Dalglish 1, Mrs Lodge 2, and Mrs Thelning 3. Cup of primroses or polyanthus: Miss E. Elliott 1, Miss J. Dalglish 2, Miss Thelning 3. Mrs Dalglish and Miss J. Dalglish were the hostesses.
