BOAT SWEPT OUT TO SEA

ANGLERS IN DIFFICULTIES Two Ashburton men who were whitebaiting at the mouth of the Rangitata river on Saturday afternoon had a narrow escape from drowning when they were washed out to sea in a small rowing boat, but they were fortunately carried back to shore on the breakers. The men were endeavouring to row across the mouth to the Temuka side, but the current was too strong, ana the boat was rapidly swept out to sea for a quarter of a mile. A person on the shore called out to them to get out of the current, which they were able to do, and the boat was eventually carried back to the Temuka side on the breakers. The men received a severe ducking. One of the rowlocks was badly bent through the fishermen's attempts to check the boat. Some anglers were drowned when th*y were swept out to sea at this point many years ago.
