THE HAUNTED BILLY
10 THB EKITOB OF THE PB«SS. Sir,—l do not agree with Sister M. G. Davies's solution of the refusal of the Sunday Island billy to stay on the fire even when stood on four stones. My solution is this: The lid was such a tight and perfect fit, that even where the rim was joined there was no vent. The evil spirits refused to stay to be made into tea. With sufficient reinforcements, they blew off the lid. When the lid was at the top a vent occurred on one side. The rush of steam (I mean evil spirits) and water was too much for the billy's equilibrium. Already much frayed in the nerves, the men did not think to make a nail-hole in the lid, to let the evil spirits soar heavenwards in their own harmless way.—Yours, etc., W. A. STRACHAN. September 11. 1937.
