AFFAIRS IN BPAIN
TO fHI IDITPBpf TBB F*SS£>. Sir,—This question of Father Garcia Morales seems to be still exercising some minds, so perhaps I should give some evidence I have seen. The British "Peace News" asked its representative in Madrid to make inquiries about the matter, and he approached several highly-placed Roman Catholic laymen. They had no hesitation in replying that Garcia Morales was still a priest. It was pointed out also that an important newspaper in (I think) Valencia was regularly publishing his articles under the heading of "Father Garcia Morales." and that a large paper in a Roman Catholic city would hardly be using this title were he not a reputable priest. A paper I received direct from Spain has also had similar information. I agree with Mr Cotonna that the worth of Father Morales's broadcast to the Pope has to he judged by other standards than the mere official position of its author in the Roman Catholic Church. I think, however, that the above evidence, coming as far as the "Peace News" is concerned from an Englishman on the spot and yet not directly concerned, should be of value. Yours, etc., _ L. A. EFFORD. September 13, 1837.
TO THE EDITOR 01? THIS PBESS. Sir,—Father Cooney has still to real' ise that abusiveness shows a total lack of arguments. In my letter to Father Morales I asked for certain historical Information. I wrote to him as one fellow student to another, and merely asked him by the way for his explanation regarding the accusauon tif Immorality. Father Morales* writings ami broadcasts, and the high esteem in which he is held m Europe are proof enough of his h'gh character. V The faet that I have not received on anlwer to my letter might be interpreted in many ways, e.g., Jather Morales might be dead or wounded or away from Madrid, or my letter might be lost, or still awaiting delivery; and it is very unwise to draw any conclusion in the matter. Therefore, I advise Father Cooney in the meantime Concentrate on me the whole of his wrath and I can assure, hum of a suitable and genuine quid pro quo.Yours, ete., UMBERTQ COLO NNA.
