WEDDINGS

MENELAUS—COATES The marriage of Violet Ormston, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs W. O. Coates (Harper street), to William James, only son of Mrs E. Menelaus (Christchurch), was celebrated recently by the Rev. J. T. McWilliam, at St. John's Church. Latimer square, the wedding music being played by Mr Claude .Davles. . , , Friends of the bride had decorated the church for the occasion with-lili.es and freesias. Mr Coates escorted his daughter, whose frock of ivory lace was mounted on cream satin. The frock was cut on classical lines ana had a trained skirt, and tiny satin buttons fastened the bodice from the neck to waist at the back. A lace cap with a halo of orange blossom held to the head her cream tulle veil, and she carried cream roses, lilies-of-the-vai-ley, and freesias. Mrs Leslie Spivey attended as matron of honour, and Misses Dorothy j Warner and Nancy Egan were bridesmaids. Their frocks, made alike, were of pink, blue, and maize stiffened net respectively mounted on taffeta, ana made with circular frilled skirts and sleeves. The collars and belts were oi stitched taffeta, taffeta buttons were used as trimming, and the crowns ol their bonnet hats were of matching taifeta, the pleated net brims being finished with flowers to tone with the pink abutilons, sweets peas and oanodils in their bouquets. Mr Albert Thompson was best man, and Messrs Arthur Buchanan and K. Thompson were groomsmen. A silver horseshoe was presented to the bride by little Diana Warner. A reception and dance were held at Dixieland, the lounge and ballroom being decorated with spring flowers and birch. „ ' The bride's mother wore a navy ensemble of figured romaine, a navy Bangkok straw hat, and a shoulder spray of cream and pink carnations. The bridegroom's aunt wore a brown floral frock, a musquash fur coat, ana a brown straw hat. LYALL—FLETT At the Clandeboye Presbyterian Church the wedding was celebrated of Georgina Margaret <Ena>, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Flett, Clandeboye and George Alexander, eldest son of Mr and Mrs R. A. Lyall, Milford. The officiating minister was the Rev. J. N. Reid. and Mrs Reid was organist. The church was decorated by friends of the bride with boughs of prunus and wattle, and brass bowls of violets and primroses. Sprigs or heather tied with tartan ribbon decorated the guests' pews. Piper piped the bride to the church and the bride and bridegroom from the church. The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a simple long-sleeved gown of cream blistered silk cloque made on princess lines. The bodice, slightly shirred in front, was buttoned down the back, and the slim fitting skirt widened into a short pointed train. On entering the church her veil was worn over her face. It was held by a cluster of orange blossom and hellebores and she carried a sncarh of freesias, hyacinths, and maidenhair fern. . ...,.., Miss Jean Flett. sister of the bride, was bridesmaid. She wore a bouffant frock of apple-green taffeta made with puffed sleeves, square neckline, and a slightly trained skirt. Her headdress of silver leaves was finished with small posies of spring flowers and ihe wore green mittens and carried a Victorian posy of primroses and japonica with silver ribbons. The bridegroom was attended by his brother, Mr Gordon Lyall, of Christchurch. As she left the church, the ■bride -was presented with a horseshoe by little Margaret Anne Brown. Mr and Mrs Flett and Mr and Mrs Lyall held a reception at the Coronation tearooms. The bride's mother wore a navy tailored coat, a floral crepe de chine frock, and a navy nedaline straw hat. She carried a posy of scarlet anemones and fern. Mrs Lyall wore a navy ensemble with accessories to tone and carried a posy of heliotrope primula andheather. When leaving for the honeymoon in the North Island. Mrs G, A. Lyall "wore a navy pin-stripe costume, ivory

crepe de chine blouse, a navy sailor hat finished with a gold embroidered eye-veil. Her fur stole was the gift of the bridegroom. Mr and Mrs G. A. Lyall will make their home in Palmerston North. BALL AT CHEVIOT PLUNKET SOCIETY BRANCH The Cheviot branch of the Plunket Society- held its annual fancy dress ball in the Town Hall. There was a particularly good attendance, and the society will benefit considerably from the pleasant gathering. A committee, under the direction of Mrs George R, Macdonald (president), spared no effort to make the event an outstanding success. Mr George R. Macdonald's prize for the best dressed group was won by Mrs F. D. Child's group, who wore beautiful old English costumes. The. prize for the best dressed couple was won by Mr and Mrs Cyril McCaskey (Waipara) (Penguins). The hall was decorated with greenery and spring ,flowers. Music for dancing was supplied by Frite Holland's dance band (Christchurch). A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Dallas Wilkinson and Mr Barry Martin. Two exhibition - dances were given by Miss K. Kennedy (Hawarden). Those present included Mr and Mrs G. R. Macdonald (Lowry Hills), Mr and Mrs A. Stocker, Mr and Mrs G Struthers, Commander D. G. Bush and Mrs Bush, Mr and Mrs Roger Clifford Mr and Mrs T. Edridge, Mr and Mrs' C. England, Mr and Mrs J. Ensor Mr and Mrs J. McPherson, Mr and Mrs E. Marshall, Mr and Mrs J. T. Read Mr and Mrs J. A.
