REFUGEES FROM MADRID

EVACUATION BY BRITISH STEAMER RESPONSE TO PLEA BY RED CROSS AUTHORITIES (Received September 9, 8 p.m.) LONDON, September 8. After an urgent request from the International Red Cross, Britain is chartering the steamer Gibel Zerjon to assist in evacuating to Marseilles 4000 refugees who are sheltering in the Embassies in Madrid. The steamer will transport 1000 on each journey, beginning at the end of this week. In addition, the United States hospital ship Maine is taking refugees of non-military age.
