NAVAL WARFARE OFF SPAIN
* Success Claimed By Rebels CRUISER BADLY DAMAGED Government Sailors Taken Prisoner (L'NITELI press association— copyright.) (Received September 9, 9.50 p.m.) LONDON, September 9. The insurgents claim that their cruiser Baleares inflicted serious damage on the Government cruiser Libertad, and also on several Government trawlers. \ message from St. Jean de Luz says that rebel radio stations report that the Baleares picked up 54 sailors from the Libertad after they had taken to the boats. The sailors were later imprisoned in Cadiz. Reports in Algiers on the outcome of the naval battle between the rebel cruiser Canarias and the two Loyalist cruisers and five destroyers, which were convoying merchantmen, are still conflicting.. It is thought that it was indecisive and that no ships were sunk. An unknown submarine, flying the insurgent colours, is reported to have stopped the Socony-Vacuum Company’s British oil tanker Pegasus, in the neighbourhood of Rhodes Island, but allowed it to proceed. ___________
