BOXING

N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND RESULTS SPECTACULAR FIGHTING BY T. O’GORMAN [From Our Own Reporter.] GREYMOUTH, September 9. A big programme of fast and spectacular bouts between the Dominion’s best amateur boxers marked the first round of the New Zealand amateur boxing championships in the Greymouth Town Hall held to-night before a large attendance. Except for an occasional lapse, the standard of boxing in most bouts was very high, nearly all the boxers being fit and aggressive. Only two of last year’s winners were seen in action, B. McKay (Hamilton), in the feather-weight division, and B. Maddern (Taranaki), in the fly-weight division. Both have entered the second round of the championship, McKay after a hard fight with A. Byrne (Hutt Valley), and Maddern after a win by default from B. Newton (Oamaru). One of the most sensational bouts of the evening was in the light-heavy-weight division between T. O’Gorman (Canterbury heavy-weight champion) and B. Neame (Southland). Neame. a tall, scientific boxer with a good straight left, was not anxious to meet O’Gorman’s heavy right hand punch, and the first round was fought at a slow pace. In the second round O’Gorman darted from his corner to begin a punishing attack with both hands which not even the best defence could have kept out. The referees were Messrs E. Stewart (Wellington), D. Paterson (Dunedin), and A. B. Joblin (Auckland), the judges, Messrs J. Kilmartin (Dunedin), W. E. Mouldey (Christchurch), H, D. Johnston (Ashburton), A. Fyffe (Invercargill), L. O'Neil (Westport), C. J. Sceats (Oamaru). and K. O’Connell (Rakaia). The following were the results:— Fly-weight H. Foote (Wellington), 7st lljlb, beat L. . McLaughlan (Manawatu). 7st 131b. on points. This bout was spoiled by two much holding and wild punching. The winner was the clean*- hitter. R. Davis (Hawke’s Bay), Bst, beat T. Hogarth (Greymouth), 7st 81b. An aggressive boxer with a heavy twohanded attack, Davis forced the pace from the start. The loser was game, but he was consistently beaten to the punch B. Maddern (Taranaki) beat B, Newton (Oamaru) by default. H. Sheridan (Auckland), 7st 131b beat J. Thompson (Gisborne), Bst. A clever boxer with a sound twohanded attack and a heavy punch. Sheridan forced the pace and kept Thompson moving back for most of the bout. Feather-Weight G. Bridge (Wellington). Sst 101b, beat M. Hunter (Oamaru), Sst lljlb. Although at a disadvantage in reach Bridge was quick to take advantage of his opponent’s poor defence, and scored steadily with a right to the head to win a very close decision. B. McKay (Hamilton), Sst 13Jlb, beat A. Byrne (Hutt Valley), Sst 91b. In a willing bout between two hard-hit-ting and experienced boxers McKay, winner of the bantam-weight championship last year-, had to fight hard all the time to gain a close decision against a clever and aggressive fighter. W. Clark (Greymouth) beat T. Borcovsky (Marlborough) by default. .K. Moran (Auckland), Sst 13Jib, beat L. Greaney (Otago). Sst 121b, on points Moran’s heavy left and right swings to the head were matched by straight longrange punches.
