TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL

MEETING OF ASHBURTON BOARD NEW EXECUTIVE ELECTED The Ashburton Technical High Board met last evening. There were present: Messrs H. Watts (chairman), E. Buchanan, J. Cook, S. Mitchell, J. H. Harper, A. Brown, W. S. Kerr, and Mrs Harriet M. Tinker. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £l3? 8s lOd. Mr Kerr was re-elected treasurer, and the chairman. deputy-chairman (Mr Mitchell). Messrs Kerr, Cook, and R. H. Lay were appointed an execureport of the principal (Mr W. Crawford) said the school reopened for the third term with a normal attendance. Five pupils had left, tour having obtained positions. The day roll was 292. As the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association had decided to construct a dining-room under its grandstand, the school’s shearing plant and equipment had to be dismantled. As no suitable building could be procured near the saleyards or show grounds to hold shearing classes, it was deemed advisable to sell the flooring, grating, and gates. The machinery was stored at the school. Thanks was extended to Lane, Walker, and Rudkin. Limited, for allowing the agricultural students to inspect the Ashburton woollen mills. Mr A. L. Jones, in a letter to the board asking for leave of absence for 12 months, because of his visit to America, raid that hr; hoped to bo able to give the board the benefit of his impressions and experiences in educational affairs abroad. Leave of absence was granted. The Education Department wrote approving of the appointment of Miss Edith E. Sell as home science mistress at the school. The Canterbury Education Board wrote stating that the application of the school board for a grant to provide additional accommodation and equipment at the school was under consideration. A grant of £1 Is was made to the Ashburton branch of the Workers’ Educational Association. Advice was received that the Technical Educational Association’s conference would open at Wellington on September 22. The chairman and Mr Mitchell were appointed delegates to tho conference. An invitation to a debate between the Ashburton County Debating Union and the Christchurch Debating Federation. in the assembly hall on September 28, was accepted. INTERCLUB DEBATE ST. STEPHEN’S BEATS HIGH SCHOOL A junior debate on the subject “That compulsory military training would be beneficial to New Zealand,” was held between the St. Stephen’s Literary and Social Club and the High School Debating Club on Wednesday evening. St. Stephen’s winning by 102 points to 101. Th" winning team, which took the affirmative, consisted of Messrs C. Childs (leader), A. Miller. and E. Stayt. and the High School Club was represented by Messrs A. Welsh. G. Harwood, and R. Vincent. Mr D. A. Bird was judge. St. Stephen's also won the junior ping-pong match by 15 nemos (354 noint=) to three games (262 points). St. Stephen’s was represented hv Messrs A. IVTillcr. A. Bright. G. Comyns. E. Stayt. E. Jordan. H. Ingram. and the High School Club by Messrs H. Kennedy. M. Stayt. R. Vincent. Hey. G. Waters. J. McKenzie. The visiters wore welcomed bv Mr S. M. Cassidy (president of the St. Stephen’s Club) end Mr E. J. Wood was chairman for the debate. EXAMINATION RESULTS ROYAL SCHOOLS OF MUSIC Results of the written examination of the Associated Beard of the Royal Schools of Music. London, hold' at Ashburton on July 3, have been received by Mr L.
