MR L. DE GIELGUD'S VISIT
During August gifts were distributed to 94 men at the Mental Hospital and clothing issued to 45 pensioners on behalf of the Red Cross Society, according to a report made at the monthly meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Centre. Lady Wigram announced that the programme for the visit of Mr Lewis de Gielgud, under-secretary-general for the movement, with headquarters in Paris, had been completed. On September 27 the Mayor (Mr J. W. Beanland) would give a civic reception in the City Council Chambers at noon. A meeting, at which the Mayor would preside, would be held in the Radiant Hall at 3 p.m.. when Mr de Gielgud would give an address illustrated with pictures of his travels. Junior Red Cross members from the schools would form a guard-of-honour under Mr A C. Maxwell. Mr de Gielgud would leave for the south on September 28 accompanied by Mrs de Gielgud and Mrs T. H. Lowry, president of the New Zealand Red Cross Society.
