OFFICIAL FORECASTS

[THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON. September 8. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m. by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: Moderate to strong: but decreasing south-westerly winds, tending to west and north during Thursday. Weather cold and ifVhanffeable, with a few isolated -Showers at first, but soon becom'■g fine and temperatures again rising:. Seas rough but moderating during Thursday. WEST COAST The following is the forecast for the West Coast of the South Island:— Moderate to strong but decreasing south-westerly winds, veering to westerly and later northwesterly. Weather for the most part fair to cloudy, but scattered showers developing during Thursday. Seas moderate. DOMINION The following is the Dominion fore-. fast: — Weather fair to fine in western districts of the South Island, elsewhere cool and changeable, with occasional passing showers. Hail in places, and snow on some of the ranges. An improvement, however, gradually extending from the westward. A depression has been passing eastward of the South Island to-day, and pressure is now rising over the Dominion, with the approach of an anti-cyclone across the north Tasman sea. A fresh depression is advancing on to southern Australia. Winds —Moderate to strong southwesterly to southerly, of gale force in places, especially about Cook and Foveaux Straits, and on the east coast, but decreasing to-morrow. < | Seas (New Zealand waters) —Moderate south of Farewell Spit and in coastal waters porth of East Cape, elsewhere rough. Eastern Tasman Sea—Moderate to Itrong but decreasing south-westerly winds in the northern portion, strong westerlies later veering to northwesterlies in the southern portion. Seas rough but moderating in the northern portion.

Auckland—Cloudy, but fine weather with a fresh southerly wind ruled during the day. Temperatures were cold. The barometer continued to rise, with a reading at 5 p.m. of 29.90 Inches. Wellington— Fine in the early part of the morning, with a northerly breeze. Later the wind turned to the «outh, and freshened. The remainder of the day was cloudy and threatening. The minimum temperature on Tuesday night was 46.2 degrees, and the maximum yesterday 59.1 degrees. Dunedin—The weather yesterday morning was fine, with bright sunshine, but there was a cool breeze from the south-west which strengthened in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 56 degrees. The Barometer rose sharply to 30.10 inches.
