SAFETY OF KAIAPOI BRIDGE

REPORT CONSIDERED BY BOROUGH COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor (the Rev. W. H, A Vickery) presided over an attendance of Crs. A. E. Brown, C. M. Williams, G. Wright, J. Hirst, H. Rinaldi, I W. Karaitiana, and A. Gordon. The secretary of the Kaiapoi Volunteer Fire Board wrote drawing attention to the present fire sump at the main bridge. The Town Clerk (Mr R. J. Smith), reporting for the works i committee, said that under the supev- ' vision of the engineer a temporary | sump had been made on the south side of the river. The Commissioner of Transport : wrote advising that the matter of the Imain bridge over the north branch of } the Waimakariri had been referred to the Main Highways Board as controlling authority for its views on the safety of the structure. The financial statement showed that receipts since last meeting were £653 3s. There was a debit balance of £559 7s Bd. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £205 13s 7d. A motion of sympathy was passed with Cr. F. Thorne in his illness.
