STATE PLACEMENT SERVICE
FARM WORKERS SOUGHT The placement for last week by the State Placement Service totalled 32, made up of 16 permanent and 16 temporary. Again this week the main call has been for farm labour, and 10 men were placed, their ages ranging from 18 upwards. The Placement Officer reports that there has been an inquiry for farm workers under 18 years of age, but such applications are the care of the Vocational Guidance Officer. Three youths with no previous experience in farm work were placed under the Government's farm labour assistance scheme 4F. Men placed under subsidised schemes are not included in the records of placements, these referring to private employers only. The demand for skilled tradesmen has been limited, though there has been more inquiry for painters, and with the seasonal conditions being suitable for this class of work, further inquiry is anticipated. . . The youth campaign is receiving consideration from employers. Many young men' are seeking the committee's assistance in finding permanent work. There are some who have had experience and others with no experience, but who have been studying different trades at technical schools. The scheme came into operation in July 17, and since that date 13 workers, aged from 18 to 24, have been placed in long-term engagements. Further placements are pending. Fullest particulars of the class of youth available will be supplied to any inquiring employer.
