CULVERDEN RIFLE CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD The annual meeting of the Culverden Defence Rifle Club was held recently in the Culverden Hall. Mr R. A. Hoban presided. There was a good attendance. The balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance of £2O 17s Bd, v/as considered satisfactory. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane; president, Mr R. A. Hoban; vice-presidents, Messrs D. L. Rutherford and A. Fisher; committee, Messrs D. M. Earl, D. Sterritt, H. Hammond, J. Watters, T. Henshaw. J. W. Earl, L. Denton, and W. Doak: secretary and treasurer, Mr L. E Taylor; club captain, Mr D. M. Earl; hon. auditor, Mr J. A. Walker; trustees, Messrs D. Sterritt and R. A. Hoban; range officers, Messrs D.faterritt and L. Denton; selector, Mr D. M. Earl; handicapper, Mr H. Hempenstall. Xt was decided that the subscriptions, marking fees, and firing order be the same as last year, and to begin the season on September 18. It was decided to obtain new targets for the new season, and it was reported that single sling shooting as carried out by most of the other clubs would be adopted. After the annual meeting the president presented the trophies for last year's competitions which were as follows:-Challenge cup, R. A. Hoban, runner-up, A. Kingsbury; L. R. C. Macfarlane medal, R. A. Hoban- runnerup W. Hamilton; Gordon Kingsbury Memorial Cup, rt. A. Hoban; runnerup, D. M. Earl; J. Walter's trophy W. Hamilton; runner-up, R. A. HoDan, Xsnby.Bergh's trophy, J. Watters; dub trophy, R. A. Hoban; consolation prize, V. Argelin. Personal Miss J. Morris, of theßeaching staff of the Culverden School, has re signed, and will join the relieving staff at M?F! S R h Wnson, who has been headmaster of the Culverden School for SK" tort -even years has received notice of his transfer to the Riccarton School, Christchurch. School Games The Culverden teams were successful in all the matches, played between schools in the Amuri district at the Culverden School recently. The results at football were as Allows -Seniors. MCLAUGHLIN WINS A GRADE Each with a possible 80 R. McLaughlin and F. W. McEvedy shot °« *or the iA grade championship of the fcliesmere Miniature Rifle Association. In deciding the tie, McLaughlin scored four bulls and McEvedy .three, the former winning the championship M. Moorhead, J. Moorhead, Noel Alexander M. Pohio, E. Alexander, F. V. Gwatkirt and Arnold Brown each scored 79. There were 34 competitors. In the aggregate, threefimshed level with 158 points each. They were R. McLaughlin, F. Alexander, and H. K. Boat. They divided first second and third prizes. L. Hintz, M. Moorhead, Nod Alexander, and F. W. McEvedy each scored 157. . Eight teams competed in the fourman team event, Sedgemere-Lakeside No. 2 winning. OLD HOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE LANDMARK IN ELLESMERE DISTRICT During the absence in Christchurch of the occupants, Mr and Mrs D McJarrow, a two-storey house at Milltown, owned for many years by the Simpson family, was, together with the contents, destroyed by fire. The house was one of the old landmarks in the district. There was no insurance on the furniture. LITTLE RIVER PERSONAL NOTES Miss Anne Cradock, Gisborne, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs; J. C. Cradock. Western Valley, Little River Miss Gwen Reed, Little River, is spending a holiday in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs G. Cornford. SCOTTISH SOCIETY CONCERT AT PREBBLETON Members of the Scottish Society recently gave an entertainment at Prebbleton in aid of the Presbyterian Church funds. A return visit was made on Thursday evening, when the society gave a programme in support of its own building project. The items included several Highland dances, reels and flings being danced by Misses Jean and Heather Muir, Heather McLachlan and Joan McDonald, the Seann Triubhais by Miss Jean Dickson, an Irish jig by Misses Jean and Heather Muir, a tap dance by Miss Heather McLachlan, and a swords dance by Miss Joan McDonald. * Music for these dances was played by Pipe-Major McLachlan and Sergeant Munro. Other items were songs sung by Mrs Anita Ledsham, Misses Jean Dickson, Janette Dickson, Beatrice Simpson,-and-Messrs L. Campbell and Cade. Recitations were given by Mr McNeill, and humorous items by Mr Bracy Wilson. Miss Alice Gibb was the accompanist
