WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
LOWCLIFFE The monthly meeting of the Lowcliffe Women's Institute was held recently, with Mrs Mcßae presiding. The golden thread was continued by Mrs Pearce, and an interesting talk was given on the Bay of Islands. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs Carter and Armstrong for assistance in planting trees at the Road Board office. Competitions resulted as follows: — Date scones, Mrs Pearce 1, Mrs H. Price 2, Mrs Hawke, sen., 3; bloom, Mrs R. E. Cross; cluster, Mrs Rogers; spike, Mrs Pearce and Mrs Hawke, sen., equal; something made from one yard of britway, Miss R. Reddecliffe J, Mrs Pearce 2, Mrs T. Hawke and Mrs H. Price equal 3. The hostesses were Miss Hawkins. Mesdames Lloyd, T. Hawke, and I. Reddecliffe. ASHTON-WATERTON There was a good attendance of members and friends at the monthly meeting of the Ashton-Waterton Women's Institute. Mrs Allen presided. The balance-sheet of the birthday party showed a credit balance. Delegates were appointed to attend the half-yearly meeting at Rakaia in October. Mrs Mcßae gave a travel talk. Competitions resulted as follows: — Buttonhole worked in 10 minutes, Miss Wotten 1, Mrs Shimmin 2, Mrs S. Pearson 3; prettiest cake plate, Mrs Read 1, Mesdames Allen and Shimmin equal 2, Misses E. Read and Wotten equal 4; one-egg coke, Miss E. Read 1, Miss W. Blee 2, Mrs Allen 33. The hostesses were Mrs Pearson and Miss Wotten. ST. MARK'S CHURCH, RAKAIA PARISHIONERS' MEETING A meeting of parishioners of St. Mark's parish, Rakaia, was held in the Vicarage recently. Canon H. J. W. Knights presided. Because of the low state of funds it was decided to hold fortnightly socials, taking the form of euchre and dancing, and to begin in September. A committee elected consists of Mesdames A. J. Crossley, A. Mead, sen., H. J. W. Knights, J. Cornelius, and Messrs L. L. Street. W. Smith, W. Mead, Moore. W. Lightfoot, D. P. Henderson, S. Hardy, A. J. Crossley, and V. Hyde. Band of Hope Mr A. Allan presided over the monthly meeting of the Rakaia Band of Hope held in St. Mark's Schoolroom on Thursday evening. An interesting talk was given by Major Duggan, of the Salvation Army, and a programme of items was performed by a party from Ashburton. Items given were:—Recitations, Misses Iris Jackson, Ruth Webster, and Major Duggan; mouth-organ solos, Keith Jackson; piano accordeon solos, Allan Frew; vocal solo, Ruth Webster; piano solo, Fred Allan; xylophone solos, M. H. Hayward. Two one-act plays entitled "A visit to Granny" and "Decision of Character" were given by M. Collins. Fred Allan. Robina Webster, Esme Jackson, Florence Hill, Ted Fearn. Fred Simpson, Beryl Argyle, M. Jackson, and Norma Bark. MEN'S HOCKEY POSTPONED The senior and intermediate five-a-side tournament to have been held by the Ashburton Men's Hockey SubAssociation to-day has been postponed until September 11, according to a decision made by the management committee. PIGS AND POULTRY MARKETS There was a yarding of 150 head at Fenn's mart yesterday, when prices obtained were as follows: —Light hens, 2s to 2s 2d each; heavy, 2s sd; light cockerels, Is lOd to 2s Id; heavy, to 3s; ducks, 2s 2d to 2s sd. There was a fair yarding of pigs at the Farmers' mart yesterday, when prices realised were as follows: —Porkers, 38s 6d to 53s 6d; stores, 19s to 27s 6d; weaners and slips, 17s to 18s 6d. ASHBURTON PERSONAL NOTES Mr N. Corbett (Anama) has been appointed master of the Tuarangi Old Men's Home, in succession to Mrs F. H. Knight, who will retire on September 30. Mrs Corbett, who will assist Mr Corbett, and whose maiden name was Miss McKenney, was one of the first Plunket nurses in Ashburton. Mr W. J. Sparrow, accompanied by his daughter, Miss Freda Sparrow, returned to Ashburton yesterday morning after a holiday visit of two months to Fiji. Members of the Springbok football team were met on the Ashburton railway station yesterday afternoon by the president (Mr H. R. D. Porter) and officials of the Ashburton Rugby Union before they continued their journey to Timaru. Mr G. A. Franks (Lyndhurst) was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace by Mr H. Morgan, S.M., yesterday. HORSE FAIR AT ASHBURTON There was a demand for good-work-ing draught horses at the National Mortgage horse fair at Ashburton yesterday. The top price was £45 10s for a six-year-old gelding. The principal sales were as follows: Mares—Three-year-old filly at £29 10s, five years at £2O, eight years at £2l and £3B, aged at £3l, £lO, and £l3. Geldings—Six years at £33 10s and £45 10s, seven years at £3O, £4O 10s, £lO 10s, and £9 10s, eight years at £35 10s, nine years at £32, 10 years at £lB, aged at £23, £lB, £ll 10s. and £l4 10s. Ponies sold at £8 and £4. WILLOWBY MISSIONARY AUXILIARY A meeting of the Willowby Methodist Women's Missionary Auxiliary was held on Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs F. H. Chapman. An interesting time was spent in reading letters from sisters on the home and overseas mission fields. Mrs C. E. Roberts sang the solo "The Cross is Greater." A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mrs George McKeage was carried in silence. DANCE AT RUAPUNA There was a fair attendance at the dance held on Wednesday evening in aid of the St. Saviour's Orphanage. The hall was decorated with mock oranges and greenery. The Monte Carlo dances were won by Miss Hazel
Galletly and Mr Stanley Galletly, and Miss Mary Harvey and Mr Lapthorne. The first on the floor competition was won by Mrs Wearne and Mr H. Whiting. Mr F. Allan was the master of ceremonies. METHVEN LADIES* GOLF CLUB Two further matches have been played by the Methven Ladies' Golf Club for the Ireland vase. In the second round, the best cards returned were Mrs J. A. Paddy 71 net, Miss Ngaire Campbell 74, and Miss C. Holmes 75. ~,,. In the third round Mrs A. Adams returned a card of 70. Other scores were:—Mrs E. D. Thomas 73 net, and Miss Natalie Holmes 75 net.
