RUGBY FOOTBALL AT WESTPORT BULLER TEAM SELECTED The Buller team to play MotuekaGolden Bay at Victoria square to-day for the Seddon Shield was announced by the selectors last evening. The team is the same as that which beat the West Coast three weeks ago. The following is the team:— Full-back: A. Dunn. Three-quarters: R. Butterfield, A. Strachan, J. Hill. Five-eighths: S. Stewart, F. Neighbours. Half-back: B. Finlayson. Forwards: T. Phipps, G. Mason, K. Corrie, G. Wilson, J. Brown, J. Lake, G. Orman, R. Pratt. Emergencies: Backs, J. J. Gonley, D. Strachan, K. BULLER BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP The Buller basketball championship was virtually completed on Thursday evening, when Technical Old Girls, by defeating the Technical School team, placed themselves in an unbeatable position. The score was 20 goals to 16, and the game was one of the best seen here this season. This is the fifth year in succession that Technical Old Girls have won the championship. WESTPORT PERSONAL NOTES Miss Jean Bailie, accompanied by Mrs W. Wilson, Hokitika, left yesterday on an extended holiday to San Francisco. Mr and Mrs W. T. Slee have left on a visit to Christchurch. Miss Muriel Harkness, of Christchurch, is visiting her sister, Miss Harkness, Queen street. Mrs F. Mayman, of Taranaki, is spending a holiday at Seddonville. Mrs Batchelor, of Christchurch, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs W. Keesing. Queen street. Mrs H. Hawes, of Karamea, is visiting Westport. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY CHAT EVENING (LPS AWARDED FOR COMPETITION At the West Coast Horticultural Society's "chat" vening the subjects were "Vegetable Culture" (Mr F. Kendrick) and "Gladioli Culture" (Mr N. Burn). The president (Mr R. G. Cooper) complir ented the committee on obtaining eight miniature cups as trophies for the spring show and four trophies and a* cup from John Burns and Company. A motion of thanks to the donors of the various trophies was carried. GREYMOUTH PLACEMENT SERVICE POSITIONS FOUND FOR MEN During the last week the State Placement Office, Greymout'.\ has placed six men in permanent employment. Three men have been found casual employment and two men have been given temporary work. Altogether 11 men have been placed in work. Besides these placements two men have been allocated to State works jobs, bringing the total placements to 13. INANGAHUA HOSPITAL BOARD The chairman (Mr J. B. Auld) presided at the monthly meeting of the Inangahua Hospital Board. Miss M. O'Halloran advised that she could begin duty as sister on August 31. The Health Department wrote that the agreement of the board with the Maruia Medical Association could be ratified for 12 months. The chairman reported that the plumbing at the maternity ward was not satisfactory. The main hospital buildings would have to be repainted in the summer. Messrs McVicar Bros, were the successful tenderers for meat supply for the year. The Medical Superintendent reported admissions to be 26, patients remaining 36. and births 10. Dr. Brockjfenshire will begin his annual leave on August 26. PASSENGERS BY AIR Passengers by Cook Strait Airways machines this morning were:— Miss E. Kirwin and Mr C. G. GOLF AT GREYMOUTH BOGEY MATCHES FOR WEK-END During the week-end, at the Kaiata links, bogey matches will be played over 18 holes. Recent rehandicaps are: N. B. McCallum 17, A. B. Baird 14. BILLIARDS MATCH AT HOKITIKA A billiards match was played last evening in Hokitika between Clark McConachy (New Zealand champion) and S. Stephens, the local champion. McConachy conceded 700 points in a game of 1000 up. Stephens beat McConachy, the score being Stephens 1000, McConachy 670. The best breaks of the game were McConachy 299. 175. -127, and 120, and Stephens 88, 42, and 34. Mr McConachy stated that the break of 88 by Stephens was the highest break by an amateur registered against him in New Zealand. After the game Mr McConachy gave a demonstration and also performed some trick shots.
OBITUARY MR P. J. KIRWAN The death took place at the Westland Hospital early on Thursday evening of Mr Peter Joseph Kirwan, garage proprietor, of Hokitika. He had been in indifferent health for some time, and entered the' hospital on Monday last, where an operation was performed. He was 49 years of age and a native of Hokitika. He leaves a wife and six children, his widowed mother, and two brothers, Patrick and Larry, of Hokitika, and one sister, Mrs Deof Napier. Mr Kirwan was a very popular resident of the town and a well-known sportsman with rod and gun. The funeral will take place to-day in the Hokitika Cemetery. RATES STRUCK FOR CURRENT YEAR MURCHISON COUNTY" COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Murchison County Council was held last week. Mr T. O. Morel (chairman) presided. Accounts amounting to £771 were passed for payment. The chairman, in extending a welcome to Mr J. H. McAuliffe, who had been appointed county clerk out of 40 applicants, referred to the cordial relationship which had existed with the previous county clerk. Mr McAuliffe thanked the council for appointing him county clerk. It was decided that "in accordance with the public notice given that the general rate of 4 5-6 d in the £, and a hospital rate of Id in the £ be struck ai a consolidated rate of 5 5-6 d in the £ on all the rateable value."
HOKITIKA PERSONAL NOTES Mrs Robert Burns, of Riccarton, is spending a holiday in Hokitika, and is the guest of Mr and Mrs Gutberlet, Gibson's Quay. Miss G. Harkness (Blackball) is at present in Hokitika and is the guest of Mr and Mrs G. Cederman. Mrs L. S. Ross and Miss L Bell, of Hokitika, are spending a holiday in Christchurch. Messrs A. Edwards .and W. Spang (Christchurch) are visiting Hokitika. HOKITIKA GOLF CLUB To-day's match at the Hokitika links will be the third qualifying round, which was postponed from last week. In conjunction with it the fifth medal handicap will be played. This is the last round for the Cranston Vase, the leading players for which are: R. O. Adamson, 6 points; Russell, Finerty, Kortegast, and Reardon, 4 points each.
