ASHBURTON R.C. REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES PROFIT OF £734 SHOWN
Financially the club had experienced one of the most successful years in its history, stated the annual report of the Ashburton County Racing Club, which was presented to the annual meeting yesterday. . Mr E. B. Newton (chairman of the committee) presided. The report added that after meeting the whole of its share of the improvements and plant out of revenue and allowing for depreciation, the club's operations resulted in a profit of £734 lis 6d. The four meetings were satisfactory in every way. The club was fortunate in securing Coronation Day for its autumn fixture, which was the most successful held in recent years. Increased revenue enabled the committee substantially to increase the stakes, the sum of £4102 being distributed, as against £3075 and £2280 for the two preceding years. A new totalisator house was erected, in conjunction with the Ashburton Trotting Club, which found the betting facilities inadequate for its meetings. It was also decided to revert to club management of the totalisator, and results had fully justified the step. The committee wished to record its appreciation of the services rendered for many years by its totalisator contractor (Mr W. H. MacDougall). Extensive improvements were made to the ladies' cloak-room, and new turnstile entrances were erected. The ground plant was also brought up-to-date by the purchase of the latest type of tractor mower, new harrows, and hustler. During the year the club suffered the loss of two of its members, Messrs W. Christmas and E. B. Horsey. The balance-sheet showed that the year began with a credit of £351 lis Id and ended with a credit of £IOB4 19s Bd. The chief items of receipts were:—Subscriptions, £156 9s; nominations, acceptances, and forfeits, £1224 Iss; totalisator proceeds, £6386 13s 4d; admissions at race meetings. £Bl4 7s 2d; royalties, £155; rents, £180: rebate from Government, £500; investments matured, £4OO. The chief items among the expenditure were: —Stakes. £4090; Government taxes (less £2456 10s 5d collected from owners and dividends). £2409 19s 7d; salaries and wages, £558 Is; maintenance, £223 18s 4d; improvements, £665 Is 3d; plant and equipment, £479 8s 8d: Racing Conference levies, £64 17s 6d. The assets exceeded the liabilities by £2235 15s Id, including the cash credit balance and £6OO on fixed deposit. "In keeping with other clubs, we experienced considerable increases from all sources of revenue," said the chairman in his annual review of the club's activities. He added that for the four oneday meetings the totalisator handled £55.253. as against £32,437 in 1936 and £24,803 in 1935. As a result the committee was able substantially to increase the stakes and it was to be hoped that further increases might be made during the coming season. It was worthy of note that although owners received £4090 in stakes, the Government received £4866 10s in taxation. "It is our earnest hope that the existing concessions in racing taxation may be continued, that is, the 1 per cent, totalisator tax concession and the 2\ per cent, rebate on the first £20.000 passed through the totalisator," stated Mr Newton. The four meetings held resulted in a profit and were very well patronised by the public and owners, and the support accorded by the latter to the jumping events was most gratifying in view of the poor fields which had paraded for those events during past seasons. The operation of the totalisator under the club's management would mean a marked increase in the revenue. The buildings and grounds were in first-class order. A sub-committee had been appointed to confer with the Ashburton Trotting Club regarding improvements to the stand accommodation and it was probable that a comprehensive scheme for extensive improvements would be placed before the committees of both clubs. If ways and means could be found for carrying out the scheme, the appointments for a countrv club would be second to none. The following were elected to vacancies unopposed:—Committee, Messrs H. F Nicoll, R. Kennedy, and C. G. C. Harper- stewards. Messrs H. F. Nicoll, R. Kennedy C. G. C. Harper, H. Morris, H. B. Mill'ichamp, J. T. Thomas. H. E Parsons, and E. W. Roberts; auditor, Mr J. W. Bowden. Mr J E. Henrvs. who had resigned from the position of handicapper after 38 years, was elected a life member in view of I The n committee of the club, which met following the annual meeting, elected the following officers:—President, Mr H F. A special prize of £3 3s was given to the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association for the light horce section of its next show. A grant of £2 2s was made to the fund for the erection of Phar Lap's skeleton at the National Museum. A similar grant was made to the St. John Ambulance Association, Ashburton.
