FOR MINES
LTHE PRESS Special Service.]
WESTPORT, August 26,
Plain speaking characterised a reference made by Mr T. H. Langford, of No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority, at a sitting of the authority held in Westport to-day to what he described as an attempt to bring political pressure to bear on him When addressing G. Gardiner (Dennistoti Motors), who applied for a renewal of a goods licence.
"I was surprised to receive a letter forwarded to rrie froth rlfiad Office, which had been sent tt) trie Minister for Mines (the Hon. P. C. Wfebb) signed by the Waimangafoa branch of the New Zealand Labour Party with the idea, I would say, of bringing a bit of presstire to bear on me," said Mr Larigford. "I want to tell you arid the world that the Prime Minister will not exercise any pressure on me. I will deal with cases, as I have the opportunity, on a fair and square basis, arid ho letter or utterances by members of Parliament, or anyone else, shall warp rhy judgment. The day that happens I am walking out."
The authorities were in the same category as the Magistrates* he added, and political influence was not going to carry any Weight With them.
