The Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.L.C., Chancellor of the University of New Zealand, arrived from the north yesterday and left later for the south. He was accompanied by his wife. Mr Hanan returned to the Dominion this week. He attended the Coronation and Empire Parliamentary Conference. Mr C. F. Browne, headmaster of the Cathedral Grammar School, left for the north last evening on a short vacation. He will stay at St. Peter's School, Cambridge. Mr C. H. Tripp arrived from the north yesterday. Mr N. H. Skinner arrived from Wellington yesterday. Mr J. A. Redpath was among' passengers by steamer express from the north yesterday. Mr Everard Aspell has left for England to take a course in chemistry at Birmingham University. He will return in three years. Mr Victor C. Peters has been appointed conductor to the Christchurch Liedertafel in succession to Mr A. Worsley, who has resigned. Mr Peters is also conductor of the Christchurch Harmonic Societ3'.
Mr F. Mclvor, the recently-appointed Metropolitan Commissioner, was welcomed at the half-yearly meeting of the Christchurch Metropolitan Council of the Boy Scouts' Association last evening. Mr R. E. Batten, treasurer of St. Ninian's Presbyterian Church, has been elected an elder of the church, but his ordination and induction have been postponed because of his illness. Motions of sympathy with Messrs L. H. Hill, J. M. G. Johnstone, and H. I. Austad in the loss of relatives were carried at a meeting last evening of the executive of the Canterbury Amateur Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association last evening. Mr F. W. White left for the north last evening.
The council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce has decided to support the Wellington Chamber's nomination for the presidency of the New Zealand Association, Mr A. G. Lunn, a former president of the Auckland Chamber. It has also decided to support for the vice-presidency Mr M. B. Myers, former president of the Dunedin Chamber, and for membership of the council Mr A. M. Seaman (Auckland).
Mr A. L. M. Perry, of the staff of the Christchurch Boys' High School, who has been on leave of absence for the last two years, returned to Christchurch from England yesterday morning. Mr Perry studied recent tendencies ,in secondary in England for a year,'and then, as the holder of a Carnegie travelling fellowship, continued investigations in the United States for seven months. After that, he returned to England to complete a report for the Carnegie Council for Educational Research on the implications of these findings to New Zealand problems. Mr R. Darroch, general secretary of the New Zealand Council of the Navy League, will arrive in Christchurch on a short visit on September 21, and will leave again on September 24. An itinerary, which is at present being arranged by a sub-committee of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League, will include an inspection of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and several visits to schools. Mr T. Chapman, of Christchurch, was unanimously elected a life member of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League at the monthly meeting of the league last evening. Several members, speaking in support of Mr Chapman's election, emphasised the value of his work for the league and his interest in its activities.
