ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION KANGIORA SUB-CENTRE MEETS The first annual meeting of the Rangiora sub-centre of the St. John Ambulance Association was held last evening. The president, Mr C. W. Tyler, presided. In the annual report it was stated that the formation of the sub-centre bad been well justified. About £SO had been collected and had been spent on equipment for the ambulance division. A gift of £lO from the Lord Nuffield grant had been used to provide the division with stretchers, blankets, and first aid kits. A first-aid class for men had been held, and all members had passed the examination. A class for men and women was in progress. A credit balance of £4 8s was shown in the financial statement. Receipts had consisted chiefly of gifts and collections, while nearly all expenditure had been on equipment for the ambulance division. The superintendent of the ambulance division reported that the membership of the division was 17. Ten members had been provided with uniforms. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr Tyler; secretary, Mr W. C. Chambers: treasurer, Mr L. P. Devlin; committee, Messrs J, D. A. Blake, R. G. A. Logan, L. Miller, W. Stephens, F. H. Lovell; auditor, Mr J. A. Ivory. It was decided to offer the Rangiora Borough School assistance in keeping its first-aid equipment up to date. IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY' AT HORRELVILLE The Horrelville Mutual Improvement Society held its fortnightly meeting in the Methodist Church. Miss Leonie W.oodfleld presided. Mrs C. Blackmore gave a talk on “Women and the Bible.” Miss Joyce Graham and Messrs Benny, J. E. Horrell, and J. Woodfield thanked Mrs Blackmore for the address. Social Evening A social evening organised by the hall committee was held recently in the West Eyreton Hall. Music for dancing was supplied by Mr E. Campbell, an extra being played by Mr T. Pester. The card competitions were won by Mrs W. Wilson and Mr E. Campbell. Miss J. Scoltock and Mr H. Peters were the winners of the Monte Carlo waltz. Mr L. Hyde was the master of ceremonies. Blackmore (Horrelville) left on Monday for Dunedin, where they will attend the educational course for the Young Farmers’ Clubs. Mr F. A. Sheat and Miss Hilda Sheat are spending a holiday in Southland. KILLINCHY MISSIONARY UNION Glimpses of the work done by missionaries among the Maoris in the North Island were given in a letter read to the Killinchy branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union at its monthly meeting by Mrs J. E. Millar. Interesting information was also given of missionary work in China. Members brought Scarves and caps for Miss Hardie’s work in Jagardhri, India. Gifts for the orphanage are to be brought to the September meeting. Brookside A missionary play-reading was given at the monthly meeting) of the Brookside branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, those taking part being Mesdames J. Boag, H. Gardiner, D. M. Lill, W. Graham, D. N. Pryor, and Miss A. Hall. Knitted caps and scarves were brought to be sent to Miss Hardie, who returns to India at the end of this month. It was decided to bring garments for the boys’ orphanage next month.

SCHOOL DANCE AT HAWARDEN At the invitation of the headmaster and staff of the Hawarden District High School, parents and friends attended a social evening held in the school. Mr Mackie and Mr Parsonage spoke of the recent conference of teachers held in Christchurch. Supper was served by the staff and Mr Mackie conducted community singing. Mr Parsonage was the accompanist.

MOTHERS* UNION AT KIRWEE

There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Kirwee branch of the Mothers’ Union. Mrs George Turner (president) presided. The opening service was conducted by the Rev.. W. H. S. Hine. An address on “The Relationship of Church and State,” the subject of the world conferences being held in Oxford and Edinburgh, was given by the Rev* T. Paterson. Mr Hine thanked Mr Paterson, and on behalf of those present wished him a pleasant voyage to America. Useful articles of clothing were forwarded to the St. Saviour’s Orphanage. It was decided to hold a “bring and buy” afternoon in aid of St. George’s Church funds at the next meeting. Bridge Competition

The fourth bridge evening between Darfleid and Kirwee for the, challenge cun was played at Kirwee' recently, resulting in a win for the home team. The top scorers for Darfield were Mr and Mrs A. A. Stott, and for Kirwee, Mr G. Begg and Mrs Sunckell.

BANKS PENINSULA ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIP HELD The Banks Rifle Association held the annual prize shoot and competition for the -Stevenson Stewart Shield at the Duvauchelle range on Thursday. J. Mould won the shield, with an aggregate score of 233. C. N. Harris (224) was the runner-up, and A. Weston and F. G. Harris scored 222. DOYLESTON LIBRARY In spite of wet weather there was a good attendance at the concert given in the Doyleston Hall in aid of the .•Memorial Library funds. Items were given by a Christchurch party brought out by Mr E. Hegan, and local artists who assisted were Mrs T. W. Felton and Messrs A. J. Woodward and L. Smith. The Leeston Night Circle staged a one-act play entitled “Rest Cure.” For the Library Committee, Mr W. O. Rennie thanked, the. performers and those who assisted in organising the concert. MOTHERS’ UNION AT PREBBLETON Mrs H. 'B. Jones presided at the monthly meeting of the Prebbleton branch of the Mothers’ Union. A talk on “English Cathedrals” was given by Miss G. M. Glanville, who was thanked by Mrs H. Brooks. Mrs C. Hands and Miss L. Giles were the hostesses. Personal Miss Eileen Thompson (Oxford), who has been the guest of Miss Joyce Kolkman, is now staying with her cousin, Mrs H. Prebble. ' PLAYS PRESENTED AT OMIHI / The. Omihi Drama Club held its first concert in the Omihi Hall recently. Three plays were given by the Omihi Club, and one play by the Amberley Gltjb. ’ The plays were entitled “Language of Love,” “On Dartmoor,” “The Miracle Merchant,’! and “The Derelict.” . After the concert supper was served and a dance was held. Music was supplied by Misses E. Hall and N. Alexander.
