SPRINGBOKS BEAT QUEENSLAND

BRILLIANT FOOTBALIi

CONVINCING VICTOKY

(CHITED PI4KBS ASSOCIATION—COPyBIOHTj»* (Received July 11, 8.30 p.m.> BRISBANE, July 11. Wearing down a spirited resistance by an inspired Queensland team the Springboks won their match at Brisbane in truly convincing fashion by 39 points to 4. The teams were:—

Springboks —Craven; Turner, Hofmeyr, Babrow, Bester; van da Vyver; Lochner; S. Louw, Lotz. Martin, van Reenen, Nel, Bergh, Strachan, M. Louw.

Queensland —Walker; Andrews, Hayes, James-Bentley, Lewis; Turich; Hockings; O'Shea, Green, Birmingham, Wilson, Monti, McDonald, Oxlade, Douglas.

In the early . stages Queensland was impressive, with fine tackling and great keenness, but later was worn down by the rugged speed of the visitors.

The South. Africans played brilliant football in the second spell, handling splendidly and throwing the ball about with abandon.

Defence Breaks Down The half-time lead of 15 points was quickly augmented, tries coming persistently as the Queensland defence wilted under incessant pressure.

The South African forwards —a great pack—gained the ascendancy both in the rucks and the scrums. The defence was rarely tested seriously, in spite of the home team's persistence. The only reply to the African total was a snappy field goal by Walker. Outstanding among the Springboks were Craven, Turner, Babrow, Bester, van de Vyver, S. Louw, and van Reenen. Babrow scored a glorious try in the first half, spreadeagling the defence with a fleetfooted burst. Van de Vyver was an effective link in a fine back chain, and van Reenen was the greatest forward on the ground. Play was faster and keener than during the previous weeks. Queensland had more effective combination but were outplayed. Van de Vyver was shaken when scoring his second try and was moved to fullback, Craven coming up to fiveeighths. Both showed adaptability, and consequently there was no disorganisation of the team. The South Africans again impressed as an unusually good allround combination. Their scorers were: Turner two tries, S. Louw two, van de Vyver two, M. Louw one, Babrow one, Martin one, and Turner six conversions.
