SERIOUS TROUBLE FEARED
JAPANESE AND CHINESE
CLASH AT WANPING NEGOTIATIONS BREAK DOWN (csrrra muss AasocrATioif-copvnioirr.) (Received July 11, 8.30 p.m.) PEIPING, July 10. ' a serious clash between Chinese and Japanse occurred at Wanping, which the Japanese are reported to be seeking to reoccupy. An outbreak of extensive hostilities is feared, as negotiations to settle the Wanping-Marco Polo bridge incident are reported to have broken down. The Chinese authorities, who have fulfilled the agreement, allege that the Japanese are returning troops to the disputed area, and they threaten drastic measures if the Japanese army fails to carry out the terms agreed on. Major Takeoimai, the Japanese military attache at Peiping, said that Japan desired to create a situation where the recurrence of such an unfortunate incident would be impossible.
SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTE
NO DAMAGE TO CITY FROM BOMBARDMENT (Received July 12, 1.15 a.m.) PEIPING, July 11. An outbreak of war was averted by a settlement in the Marco Polo bridge controversy, reached early to-day by high Chinese and Japanese officials. The terms are secret. Japanese liaison officers were fraternising to-day with the Chinese gendarmes garrisoning Wanping, a walled city, which has not suffered from the bombardment.
