JAPANESE AND CHINESE

' a serious clash between Chinese and Japanse occurred at Wanping, which the Japanese are reported to be seeking to reoccupy. An outbreak of extensive hostilities is feared, as negotiations to settle the Wanping-Marco Polo bridge incident are reported to have broken down. The Chinese authorities, who have fulfilled the agreement, allege that the Japanese are returning troops to the disputed area, and they threaten drastic measures if the Japanese army fails to carry out the terms agreed on. Major Takeoimai, the Japanese military attache at Peiping, said that Japan desired to create a situation where the recurrence of such an unfortunate incident would be impossible.
