The Hon. Mr Justice Kennedy arrived by the steamer express on Saturday from Wellington.
The Hon. Adam Hamilton, Leader of the Opposition, arrived in Christchurch on Saturday morning from the north and left later for the south.
The Rev. Dr. John A. Graham, a former Moderator of the Church of Scotland, is visiting Christchurch, v and is the guest of the Rev. T. W. Armour. Yesterday morning he preached at the service at Knox Church, and in the evening at St. Andrew's.
Mr Gordon Jones, "Vale Royal," Halswell, was elected Dominion president of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association at the annual meeting in Hamilton.
Dr. I. C. Kandel, of Columbia University, New York, arrived in Christchurch on Saturday and is staying at the United Service Hotel. He is a world authority on comparative education, and is making a special tour of the Dominion.
Professor J. Shelley, Director of Broadcasting, who has been visiting Invercargill, passed through Christchurch during the week-end on his return to Wellington.
Drs. L. Brown and E. H. Williams were passengers from the north on Saturday. Mr J. McNair, District Railways Engineer, returned on Saturday from Wellington. The Hon. F. Waite, M.L.C., was a passenger from the north on Saturday.
Messrs J. G. Collins, C. J. Loughnan, and J. H. Rhodes arrived from the north by the steamer express on Saturday 'morning. Sir Charles Clifford returned yesterday morning from Wellington. Colonel J. L. Saunders was a passenger from the north yesterday morning.
Judge J. Harvey, of the Native Land Court, arrived from the north by the steamer express yesterday morning.
Dr. M. G. Louisson returned to Christchurch yesterday morning from the north. The Hon. M. Connelly, M.L.C., arrived from Wellington yesterday morning. Captain W. Oliver, formerly in command of the cable ship Recorder, having completed furlough in England, is now in command of the cable ship Cambria, which has its base at Plymouth. The ship is at present on cable repair work in the West Indies.
Flying Officer R. G. R. Buckley, elder son of Mr G. Buckley, of Epsom, who has been in the Royal Air Force for several years, has been promoted to the rank of flight lieutenant. Mr H. J. Lilico, of Winton. has been appointed secretary of the Awarua Dairy Factory Company, Ltd., in succession to Mr J. A. Broom, whose retirement takes place next month. There were 16 applicants for the position. Mr O. M. Samuel, who has been manager of the Paeroa branch of the Bank of New Zealand for the last six years, has been appointed manager of the bank's Suva branch. He will leave New Zealand in about five weeks.
Mr J. K. Steward, of the Otago Medical Schoo], has been recommended to receive the award of the Lovel Moss Minor Exhibition by the Manchester University.
Mr H. S. Manderson, of Wellington, who has been on a business trip in the South Island, returned north on Saturday evening. Mr D. I. Macdonald, secretary of the Canterbury Employers' Association, returned yesterday from the north, where he has been attending Conciliation Councils in Blenheim and Wellington. He will leave again this evening for Wellington to attend a council opening to-morrow.
