PUBLIC FIRSTAID CLASSES

RANGIORA AMBULANCE SUBCENTRE

Judging by present enrolments', the ■ public first-aid classes which have] been arranged by the Rangiora subcentre of the St. John Ambulance Association will be well supported. They will begin on Wednesday and the lecturer will be Dr. L. M. King, divisional surgeon. Basketball Competition Matches in the North Canterbury Basketball Association's competition on! Saturday afternoon resulted:—Oxford j B 14, Rangiora B 6; Waikuku 5, Cust 2; Sefton 16, Loburn 7: Ashley 19, Clarkville 13. Drama Classes Drama classes which have been conducted by Mr G. A. Worthington (Association for Countx-y Education) in the Rangiora district since early in June will end shortly. There are classes at Sefton, Ambeiley, Rangiora, Southbrook, Kaiapoi, Ohoka, Clarkville, and West Eyreton, and each has prepared three Qr four one-act plays which will be presented during the next three weeks. Twelve plays selected from the whole area will be presented at a non-competitive festival at Rangiora on August 2 anil 4, which will mark the close of Mr Worthington's stay in the district.

BANKS PENINSULA POWER BOARD

RATE FOR YEAR LEVIED A/meeting of the Banks Peninsula Electric Power Board was held at Little River. There were present: Messrs C. E. Kay (chairman), J. V. Chapman, A. M. Helps, R. O. Bradley,

and F. R. Davis. It was reported that the Akaroa County Council had been requested to appoint a representative to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr J. E. Thacker. Rates totalling approximately onefifth of a penny in the £ were levied for the year 1937-38. The engineer reported that the survey of the projected line to the Kaik had been completed and the necessary plans and data forwarded to the Government departments concerned. The line would be proceeded with as soon as material was available. The financial report showed a credit of £IOO in loan account and £IO3B in the general account. Amounts totalling £1033 were passed for payment. It was resolved to investigate further the matter of raising a loan of £2OOO at 3J per cent. A report will be made to the next meeting.

MINIATURE RIFLES AT HOBORATA

There was a good attendance at the fourteenth shoot of the Hororata Miniature Rifle Club. The H. Oliver challenge cup was won by F. N. Wright, 69 and 68, the runner-up being E. Fleming with 69 and 67. The Tisdall button and O'Sullivan shield were won by G. Green, the runner-up being W. R. Oliver. The best offlc/aZ scores were: E. Fleming 69, F. N. FANCY DRESS CARNIVAL AT LINCOLN

A successful fancy dress carnival in aid of St. Stephen's Anglican Church was held In the Lincoln Hall, there being a large attendance in spite of wet weather. The judges were the Rev. and Mrs C. L. Wilson (Southbridge). and Mr C. M. Blake was master of ceremonies.

BETTER DRAINAGE WANTED

DEPUTATION TO SPRINGS COUNTY COUNCIL

After a public meeting of farmers affected by the flooding from the LI and L2 river, which was held recently at Springston South, Messrs E. J. Harris, H. A. Kimber, M. Robson, and H. B. Moir waited on the Springs County Council at its monthly meeting to present a petition asking for x-elief. The council was asked to approach the Public Works Department with a request that the work of providing permanent relief should be regarded •as a work of major importance and j be included in the programme of such I works now being prepared by the department. The deputation asked the council to give, in the meantime, what temporary relief it considered possible, and offered to supply a workingbee of from 10 to 20 men to assist the council's staff for a day on such work. The position was explained at some length, Mr Harris saying that the president and secretary of the Canterbury Progress League were willing to give all assistance in the negotiations with the Government. The council agreed to approach the Minister for Public Works, and the chairman (Cr. J. S. Simpson) and Cr. P. V. Bailey were requested to interview the Minister when in Wellington next month, and to arrange for Messrs F. Coop (president), and P. R. Climie (organiser) of the Canterbury Progress League to be present. The provision of temporary relief was referred to the works overseer. The monthly financial statement gave the Soringston riding debit balance as £Bl4 lis. and the Greenpark riding credit as £62 4s 3d. The Hos- , pital Board's levy was given as £1352, an increase of £62 on the previous year's levy. I For the Motukarara Hall Commitjtee, Mr T. M. Wheeler applied for an electric light to be provided in front of the hall, the committee to pay for the current used. The application was granted. Permission was granted by the employment division of the Labour Department for the council to use scheme No. 5 labour for the clearing of gorse and broom on reserves, but not for the cleaning of drains, which was regarded as ordinary maintenance. After considering the estimates, the council agreed that a general rate of one penny in the £ should be levied in both riding?. The chairman expressed regret that increases were necessary, but said that there had been a reduction in the valuation of the county of more than £50,000, in addition to which large payments had to be made for road sealing. SCHOOL SPORTS AT WAIKARI Pupils from the Scargill and Motunau Schools visited Waikari, and played friendly games of football and basketball with the Waikari school children. At basketball the Waikari girls won by 11 goals to 0. Miss F. E. Fleming was the referee. The Waikari boys beat a combined ScargillMotunau team at Rugby by 40-0. Mr G. W. Soal was referee.

The bachelors and spinsters of Glentunnel, WhitecllfTs, and Coalgate districts entertained the benedicts and visitors from surrounding districts at their annual ball held in the Glentunnel Hall, decorated "With coloured streamers, paper flowers, and greenery. The committee, with Mr D. Workman as chairman, and Messrs G. King and T. Burgess as Joint secretaries, deserve much credit for the excellence of their arrangements. The music was supplied by the Majestic Dance Band (Christchurch). Miss G. Jewell and Mr L. Westwood played extras, and Messrs T. Burgess and N. Hobbs were masters of ceremonies.
