Whitcombe, who is leading, played perfect golf despite four putts lipping the hole. His round of 70 equals the record for the lengthened course. C. A. Whitcombe, brother ot tne leader, played soundly to take third place. He holed three 30ft putts and also a chip shot. With the field reduced from 141 to 47, a British victory is now expected. Six Americans are included in.the first 17, but the Americans failure to reach the expected heights, with the elimination of Sarazen and Manero, has been the sensation of the meeting. Other prominent competitors eliminated include Alfred Perry a former title-holder, Kirkwood, Button, and the amateur champion, K. Sweeney. Locke is the only amateur to survive. , Positions after two rounds are.—
