(PaiS» ISSOCUTIOH TJtI.KORAK-> WELLINGTON, July 9. John Anthony Crawford, a salesman, aged 49. was sentenced to a total of six months' imprisonment by Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., to-day. on two charges of false pretences. He was convicted and discharged on five other charges- of false pretences involving advertising on pass-out checks from theatres.
Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle said that defendant had 54 previous convictions "mostly for offences of the same nature." Accused had only been discharged from prison on April 16, after serving seven months for false pretences.
"I am sorry that I have not power to make it three months cumulative on each of the three charges, so it will have to be three months on two charges only." said the Magistrate. Detective-Sergeant Doyle said that during May and June accused called on a number of business houses, canvassing for advertisements for theatre pass-out checks. In two cases he represented that he had authority to issue checks, and in five others he obtained money tor advertisements.
