TRAFFIC AT BANK CORKER

VEHICLE-ACTUATED SIGNALS

TENDER ACCEPTED BY CITY COUNCIL

The tender of Messrs P. R. Baillie and Company, of Wellington, was accepted by the Christchurch City Council last night for the supply of vehicleactuated traffic control signals to be used at the Bank of New Zealand intersection. The total cost will be £1662 10s. The equipment will allow pedestrian trahic to be controlled as weu as motor traffic. It was on«inahy mttnaea that the signals should pe installed on trial, but the councils decision last night means that the sighais will be permanent. The tenders received Were: —HydroPad Vehicle Traffic Control Syndicate, Ltd., £1398 4s 2d; Messrs P. K< Baillie and Company, Wellington, £1529, plus .xtras; Cory-Wright and Salmon, Ltd., £1567 9s, plus extras. It was reported that the tender accepted covered equipment wh.ch had been and was being installed widely in iLhgland, where a subsidy was paid by th° Transport Department on equipment of a satisfactory standard. In the opinion of the Chief Traffic Inspector this was the most easily understood, as it had no flashing sighais and was worked on the three-phase system, each phase making provision for righthand and left-hand -turns. The timing period had a range of from 12 to 56 seconds.

Provision was made for the inclusion of pedestrian control by means of a push button. Although the underground conduit necessary to carry the required cable was covered by the tender, the actual cost of other equipment was not included. Should the council at a later date decide to make provision for pedestrian control, the extra equipment could be installed at little extra cost. If this tender was accepted, therefore, it would be desirable to install a four-phase controller instead of a three-phase controller, to malte provision for future control of pedestrian traffic. This extrp cost would be £37 10s. In open meeting, a division was sought by Cr. G. Manning on an amendment that the report be referred back to the committee. This was defeated by 10 votes to five.
