EXEMPTION FROM RATES
PROPERTIES LEASED BY CROWN
OPPOSITION BY CITY COUNCIL
The Crown is claiming exemption from rates on properties it occupies as lessee, according to a report presented to the Christchurch City Council last night, by the finance committee. This claim will be opposed by the City Council, which decided to approve the committee's action in lodging an objection in the Assessment Court to the exemption of such properties from rates. "It has been represented to the committee that in the valuation roll recently received from the Valuation Department, properties leased by the Crown have been valued separately, and it is claimed that as Crown properties they are exempt from rates," the report said. "The committee does not know of any statutory authority whereby tha Crown can claim exemption from rates on properties which they are leasing and are occupying as lessees, and has therefore given instructions for an objection to be lodged with the Assessment Court in all cases where the procedure previously mentioned has been adopted."
