ENGLISH SIDE'S LACK OF FIGHTING SPIRIT
INFERENCES FROM TEST WITH NEW ZEALAND
LONDON, July 4. The cricket writer of the "Observer," criticising the authorities for not solving the opening batsmen problem in view of the next series of tests against Australia, declares that the fact that the New Zealand team, which was only moderate against the counties, escaped defeat at the hands of England s full strength, proves the lack of the English fighting spirit. He says: "A test match does not transform Cowie into Gregory, Roberts into O'Reilly, or Vivian into Fleetwood-Smith. Yet that is how the Englishmen batted in the first innings. There are more ominous blots than Hutton's duck, notably the eccentricity of Robins's captaincy and Ames's loss of knack in wicketkeeping. Verity, lacking help from the pitch, was only a run-checker, and there was not a wicket-taker."
