EMPLOYMENT FOR GIRLS

NUMBERS INSUFFICIENT FOR DEMAND

FEWER NOW WITHOUT WORK

i "There has been a decrease in the J number of girls out of work.*' stated I the annual report of the Christchurch Girls' Vocational Guidance and Employment Committee, presented at the annual meeting of the committee last evening. "Owing to the number of junior positions offering, we have had to guard against girls leaving school before they are sufficiently trained. "The number of girls trained in clerical work has been Insufficient to satisfy the demand, and we could have placed many more girls in factories and In domestic work. So the figures for placements do not fully represent the number of positions offered during the year. The following numbers of girls were placed in industrial or commercial work during the year ended June 30 (figures for the previous year in parenthesis):— "Clerical 129 (40), shop assistants 44 (33), sewing trades 60 (21), cake kitchen 14 (7), domestic 125 (192), factory 88 (114), professional 11 (12), seasonal rural 0 (33). Total number placed in 1936-37, 469, compared with 452 in 193536, and 66 in 1934-35. "Wherever possible, contact is maintained with girls who are placed In positions, and both girls and employers are encouraged to report to us. Through the year, factories and workrooms have been visited at the invitation of the managers. These visits are valuable in giving us knowledge of conditions and the types of work. "The value of our placement service can be seen in the number of firms of high standing which apply to us repeatedly for girls. An indication of the increased use of the office is that 5672 persons were interviewed during the year, compared with 4456 in 193536"
