THE COURTHOUSE SITE
REPORTED TO BE AVAILABLE IN SEPTEMBER
The Ashburton Borough Council met last evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods), Messrs E. H. Orr. R. Kerr. W. H. Robinson, J. T. Pratley, J. McElhinney. H. W. Sherratt, S. Mitchell, J. Shaw, E. Buchanan, J. Thompson, and Dr. J. Connor. The financial statement showed that receipts since the previous meeting totalled £176 12s sd, the chief items being rents £2B 6s. abattoir lees £55 Is 3d, and drivers' certificates £lB ss. The Department of Agriculture wrote asking the council to state its opinion about a movement fostered by the Society for the -Prevention of Crueltv to' Animals for the introduction of an act to standardise the method of slaughtering animals in meat export works, abattoirs, and slaughter houses. It was left to the Town Clerk (Mr R. C. Major) to confer with the manager of the abattoir. Replying to the council's letter about the old courthouse section, the UnderSecretary for Justice (Mr B. C. Dallard) wrote that because of the slow progress of work on the new courthouse it had not been possible to vacate the old building within the stipulated time. The new courthouse was expected to be finished by the end of September, when arrangements would be made for the immediate re-,
moval of the present building. In the meantime there was no objection to the council occupying the portion of the site between the courthouse and Barretts. Ltd. The letter was referred to the finance committee and Mr Shaw. The abattoir manager (Mr G. B. Williams) reported that stock slaughtered in June was as follows: —Cattle 166 (one condemned), calves 6 (two condemned), sheep 777 (one condemned), lambs 9, pigs 12
BALL AT METHVEN
COLLIE DOG CLUB'S TROPHIES
A successful ball under the auspices of the Methven Collie Dog Club was held in the Methven Town Hall on Friday evening. There was a good attendance, many of those present being visitors from other districts. Music for the dance Vas supplied by Cook's orchestra, extras being played by Mrs A. Lawrence and Messrs J. Cretney and K. Cook. Mr L. L. Richards was master of ceremonies. During an interval, the president of the club (Mr R. C. Todhunter) presented several cups which had been won at the recent trials. In appealing for more support for the club, he said that few people realised the value of the sheep dog. The clubs had been formed to encourage the breeding of better dogs, and the Methven Club was one of the oldest clubs in New Zealand, having been formed 41 years ago. The awards were as follows:—Silver cup for winner of long pull, Mr J. J. Harmer (Alford Forest); silver cup for winner of huntaway, Mr D. Mackenzie; silver cup for best district dog in classes I and 11. Mr W. F. Ross: silver cup for best twodog team (open), Mr H. White (Grasmere); silver cup for district dogs that have never previously won, Mr D. Mackenzie; silver cup, given by Mr J. R. Todhunter for local hill team, Mr John Logan. Mr and Mrs A. S. Rowell entertained f about 100 friends at a dance held in the Ealing Hall to celebrate the com- '. ing-of-age of their eldest son, Eric.
